The one in our old tub is the round knob type. It has three knobs and the one for the shower is most likely stripped. Mr. Beachy could not get the knob off to check it cause the screw holding it on seems to be stripped as well.

So, we have decided that when we get Bath Fitters to come put a tub kit in for us, they will put in a new faucet in the wall and a single handle Delta unit in the new tub.

Until then we (well me at least since he's a tad younger) get a little touch of nostalgia everytime I take a shower.

HiJinx you were correct if it was a 2 handled system. It does sound like the middle handle is stripped, or just plain old. Replacing it with a mixer valve is a smart move. They are much easier to work on, shut off the water supply and you can replace the cartridge in the future. Beachie, make sure there is a shutoff somewhere accessible for use in the future, preferably in the basement or an access panel in the wall behind..
