Houston police arrest eight from New Orleans
The Washington Times ^ | January 28, 2006 | Hugh Aynesworth

Posted on 01/28/2006 8:48:07 AM PST by Seattle Conservative

A multilevel gang task force in Houston yesterday announced the arrests of eight hurricane refugees from New Orleans -- a group Houston police say is responsible for at least 11 slayings and numerous burglaries and thefts in the metropolitan area since November.

"We're talking about what appears to be a rivalry between two groups of individuals who were associated with two different housing projects in New Orleans," Houston police Capt. M.D. Brown told The Washington Times. "Their rivalry began several years ago -- certainly prior to Katrina -- and carried over to Houston."

He said the arrests came after "weeks of cooperation with Louisiana police and the FBI."

Houston's crime rate spiked noticeably in the final months of 2005, and police officials have attributed much of the increase to lawbreakers who moved to the city after Hurricane Katrina.

Tensions have risen throughout the city's heavy crime areas since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, said one Houston police officer, who added, "some real bad boys have joined us and apparently have picked up where they left off in New Orleans."

>snip

Some of the killings have been gang against gang, he said, but "when they run out of money, that's when innocent citizens get involved -- with carjacks, robberies and kidnappings."

Violence has risen not only on the streets but in the schools: Houston's district, which absorbed about 6,000 student refugees, increased security this month after reporting at least a dozen major fights involving displaced students. The worst was a near-riot in a high school lunchroom last month that ended in the arrests of 15 refugees and 12 local students.

I think Houston is perfectly capable of cleaning this mess up. Much more so than NO. Look at what they have done already. I just think that lancing the boil is the first step in beating back the infestation. I mean, they are in Texas now. Land of the Alamo, Davy Crockett, the Texas Rangers ....

Great points! Plus, I suspect that Houston PD has actual boots on the ground and bodies in those boots, rather than a shadow, invisible force like NOLA had.

I live in Texas on the Louisiana line. We had MANY evacuees from New Orleans in our town before and after katrina. We had a rape and a child molestation in two different shelters and much vandalism. One church offering shelter had to shut down; it was too much.

Gee, if Bush would have just done something sooner to help these people, this wouldn't have happened...... (sick sarc.)

Next time there's an evacuation from N.O., put the wild animnals in cages until they can return home to Mayor Ray Nagin and all the other inept idiots running that city and state.

Memo to Louisiana hoodlums: "Hey Todo, this ain't Nalins' no mo'!" It is a shame that Texas has to suffer the indignities of the criminal elements from New Orleans, but that being said, at least Texas will handle the problems in rapid fashion, unlike their fellow law enforcement officials in Louisiana. I sure hope "Chocolate Nagin" and "Totally Blank Blanco" are so proud of their fellow citizens.

DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS.........I KNEW WE'D NOT ALLOW THESE GANGS TO CONTINUE THEIR CRIME HERE IN HOUSTON.

Why do we have to step all over these gang members, why didn't the N.O.'s police long ago arrest and jail these scumbags? These guys should've never been around to even evac to any place, let alone Houston.

Because NO's Police Department was on paper only. Plus, if it is anything like Los Angeles, City Hall bends over backwards to soothe the criminal element and harass the police for any law enforcement they dare to do -- past asking the criminals nicely to stop what they are doing.

Lest they offend them, I think. God forbid.

The murderers from NO will be taking out a lot of Texans before they are all rounded up. This is a surprise to NO criminals because no one cared if they murdered in NO. Texas is a different animal.

anyone with half a brain knew this was going to happen, Houston is getting what it deserves for inviting the thugs from NO to come to their city.

Notice that the adjoining parishes scrambled sheriffs with shoot to kill order to keep the NO scum from invading their cities... they knew what we wading out of the water.
