For something as large as an artillery shell, wouldn't the rifling grooves be pre-cut onto the shells?

If so, I wonder why Ned Barnett would assert that it's unfired?

I could find only one other photo credited to the guy who took this one. Another damage photo. The photog has a limited repertoire.

(And if they directed the men to stand up the old shell for a picture, then it's deception.) At the risk of their lives- since it's been pointed out that the shell is fused. Dud ordnance is dangerous as hell to handle.

You're right of course, but guess what we the public would have heard: "U.S. Incompetence: Dud Missile from Illegal Airstrike Kills Children Sifting through Rubble for their Murdered Parents!"

The NY Times must be in deep doo doo. A few weeks ago we received an invitation to subscribe. I have never subscribed, never ordered anything from them, how did they get our address. I tossed the invitation. This weekend we received a Sat and a Sun NYTs free, in our driveway in Houston. They were tossed as well, along with the rest of the trash.

If you google up photos of a 155mm shell, you'll see no rifling grooves cut into the copper band near the base.

The band is copper, a soft metal. I'm suprised the
tribesmen haven't pried the driving band off for sale as
scrap.

At a glance, its hard to tell the exact caliber 152mm or 155mm... I used Photoshop to superimpose a US M107 155mm shell on the shell in the picture; they're close enough to each other that the difference (slightly shorter and more curved nose) can be written off as deformation resulting from impact.
