Your Mental Attitude - Days of Chivalry
When the days of chivalry are mentioned, we usually think of a gallant knight rescuing a fair lady or treating her with unusual courtesy. Gallant the knights were-and certainly courteous
But the fundamental basis of chivalry was friendship. The Knights of the Round Table were a sworn brotherhood of men whose strongest ties were based on friendship. Perhaps the most celebrated knight of chivalry, the Chevalier de Bayard, was famous above all else for his friendships.
Friendship is loyalty-to our family, to our job, to our community. It is not veering and tacking like a rudderless ship or playing both sides of the street or using people just for our own advantage.
It is made up of little things-a thoughtful word at the right moment
a little kindness beyond the call of duty . . . a sense of understanding of the other fellows problem
a genuine liking for people . . . a sense of responsibility toward our associates.
It has often been said that we must BE a friend to HAVE a friend. And, like all the worthwhile things in life, friendship takes work and effort. We cannot take our friendships for granted. They are like the food we need at regular intervals-they must be given constant and diligent nourishment . . . We can no more get along in the world without a friend than we could without food or the air we breathe.
One of the important things we learn is that friendship involves tolerance for the weaknesses of others-as these same people are tolerant of our own shortcomings . .
Good friendships are those that wear well, said Emerson. When our attitudes are chivalrous, we find that our friendships constantly grow stronger and richer.
The age of chivalry is never past, so long as there is a wrong left unredressed on earth. Charles Kingsley

No Grudges After Sunset
Do not let the sun go down on your wrath. Ephesians 4:26
|
A little boy got into a fight with his brother and the whole experience left him feeling bitter. When his brother wanted to make things right, he refused to listen. In fact, he would not speak to his brother all day.
Bedtime came, and their mother said to the boy, "Don't you think you should forgive your brother before you go to sleep? Remember, the Bible says, 'Do not let the sun go down on your wrath'" (Ephesians 4:26). The boy looked perplexed. He thought for a few moments and then blurted out, "But how can I keep the sun from going down?"
He reminds me of some Christians. They're angry at certain people and hold grudges. When they are confronted with their unforgiving attitude and urged to make things right, they sidestep the issue and refuse to heed the clear instruction of Scripture. True, we cannot change another person's heart, but we are responsible for our own attitude. The Bible says, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32).
No, we can't keep the sun from going down. But we can keep it from settingon our anger. And that means we must forgive. Richard De Haan
Anger, malice, and ill will
Can leave a stain of sorrow;
Ask forgiveness by His grace
Before it is tomorrow! Bosch
For every minute you are angry, you lose sixty seconds of happiness.

Life
by Ronald Reagan
I wonder what it's all about,
and why We suffer so,
when little things go wrong?
We make our life a struggle,
When life should be a song.
Our troubles break and drench us.
Like spray on the cleaving prow
Of some trim Gloucester schooner.
As it dips in a graceful bow...
But why does sorrow drench us
When our fellow passes on?
He's just exchanged life's dreary dirge
For an eternal life of song...
Millions have gone before us,
And millions will come behind,
So why do we curse and fight
At a fate both wise and kind?
We hang onto a jaded life
A life full of sorrow and pain.
A life that warps and breaks us,
And we try to run through it again.
President Ronald Wilson Reagan, 1911-2004
