Senator Ted Kennedy's Children's Book to Make Big Splash

Scholastic announced that it has signed a publishing deal with Senator Edward M. Kennedy to publish his first children's book.

A 56-page picture book illustrated by Caldecott-winning artist David Small, My Senator and Me: A Dog's-Eye View of Washington, D.C. is not only a charming pet story, but also engages children in understanding how government works. The book will be published in May 2006. The dog in Kennedy's forthcoming book is named Splash.

85 years ago, Scholastic was founded to help kids understand the world in which they live and to be aware of their rights and responsibilities in a democracy. Today, this is still at the core of the Company's mission, and Senator Kennedy's book is a fitting addition to Scholastic's publishing program.

"Kids love animal stories, and they will be captivated by the tale of Senator Kennedy's extraordinary Portuguese Water Dog, and his adventures in Congress!," said Lisa Holton, President Children's Books and Book Fairs, Scholastic.

"The Senator's book gives readers a true behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a Senator through a dog's-eye view and will help kids learn about the work of our elected officials in a unique and fun way."

"I am very excited about the opportunity to create a book for young leaders and their families that will deepen their understanding of how our American government works," said Senator Edward M. Kennedy. "Reading is a lifelong adventure, and I hope that this book will spark an interest in young people to learn more about their government and to explore the joy of books."

My Senator and Me: A Dog's-Eye View of Washington, D.C. tells the story of Senator Kennedy and his dog, Champion Amigo's Seventh Wave (nicknamed "Splash" by his original owner) and a day in their life in the Senate. A Portuguese Water Dog, Splash is always at Senator Kennedy's side - in his office, at press conferences, in meetings at the Capitol and even right outside the Senate chamber.

Told from Splash's point of view, this charming picture book not only takes readers through a full day in the Senator's life, but also explains how a bill becomes a law. My Senator and Me also includes biographies of Senator Kennedy and Splash.

Senator Kennedy's inspiration for My Senator and Me: A Dog's-Eye View of Washington, D.C. came from his work with the Washington-based reading program Everybody Wins!. The program connects adults with elementary school students who work together to develop reading skills. Senator Kennedy has been part of this program for five years.

Senator Kennedy will donate his net proceeds from the book to charities including Read Boston, an organization that supports literacy in the Boston public schools. The book is expected to make a big splash, and if anyone knows about big splashes, it's Kennedy -- just as the relatives of Mary Jo Kopechne.

Will he "write" children's books about his other dogs, Toronado and Mary Jo?

This is *so* just wrong. :P You *know* the circuits are going have a ball.

Here's a link to the video with Mo Rocca on Countdown with Keith Olbermann. If not just outrageous.

I'm surprised Scholastic is doing this. No doubt the book will sell well and please the teachers who peddle their books, but it will also anger a fair number of parents. Is it worth it for a children's book publisher to mire itself in that kind of controversy?

Yes, it will make a big splash. They are going to throw the first carton off a certain famous bridge in New England.

I am confused. Is the name "Splash" related to this dog being a water dog and the "splash" when he jumps into the water.....or the "splash" of Scotch poured over ice....or the "splash" of cars in the water...or the "splash" of the tsunami when Ted jumps into the ocean

ODE TO MARY JO (With apologies to Bobby Gentry)

It was Seventeen July, Another sleepy, humid Hyannis day,
I was out shuckin' clams And my brother was slicin’ brie,
And at supper time we stopped and walked back to the compound to dine
And Rose hollered at the back door, "You savages remember to act refined."
Then she said, "I got some news this morning from Cambridge

***Today Mary Jo and Teddy went off the Chappaquiddick Bridge ."***

Joe said to Rose, as he passed around the Roquefort cheese "
Well, Teddy never had an ounce of sense, pass the lobster please
There's five more states in the lower forty-eight I got to screw."
And Rose said it was a shame about Mary Jo, she knew
Seems like no good news ever comes out of Cambridge

***And now Teddy and Mary Jo went off the Chappaquiddick Bridge.***

Brother said he remembered when he and Jack and Teddy K
Wrecked a yacht on a cove on Cape Cod Bay
And wasn't I talking to him after Mass last Sunday night
I'll have another couple escargot, you know, it don't seem right
I saw her at the gin mill yesterday in Falmouth with some kids

***And now you tell me Mary Jo and Teddy went off the Chappaquiddick Bridge.***

Mama said to me, "Child, what's happened to your appetite?
Bridget’s cooked all morning and you haven't touched a single bite
That nice Police Chief Arena dropped by today
Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, Oh, by the way
He said he saw a girl that looked like you on the On Time-Two at nine
And she and Teddy K. were throwing something into Pocha Pond"
A year has come and gone since we heard the news 'bout Mary Jo
Brother married Vicky Gifford, they bought a place in Truro
There was a virus going 'round, Joe caught it and died last spring
And now Rose doesn't seem to want to do much of anything
And me I spend a lot of time snorting coke up in Cambridge
And dropping tabs over on the Chappaquiddick Bridge.

My Senator and Me: A Dog's-Eye View of Washington, D.C.

to be followed by a sequel: My Senator and His Oldsmobile: A Fish-Eye View of the Chappaquidick Bridge.

... is not only a charming pet story, but also engages children in understanding how government works.

is not only a deliciously ironic hypocrisy, but alo engages children in understanding how government works for really rich guys whose family has all sorts of shadowy connections, so they can literally get away with murder, philandering, public drunkeness, and appearing in public looking like a rotting bagpipe full of squid guts.
