During Hajj, pilgrims flock to the Jamarat Bridge in Mina to cast stones at three pillars representing the devil. The cylindrical pillars (top) were replaced by short walls (bottom) after a previous fatal stampede in 2004. The idea was to improve crowd flow and reduce congestion.

How many more times will the Saudi Government continue to let this happen??? There have been mass deaths at so many Hajj's lately, it's hard to know what to think. I agree with another post that something must be fundamentally wrong at some level within the belief system... but something must have sparked the stampede. Much like the bridge trampling in Iraq. This makes me terribly sad. But then, the strange rituals of the Muslim world scare me greatly. Why any god would 'require' such self abuse.... I don't get it. *sigh*
