Vatican accepts attacker's release

THE Vatican said today it accepted the decision by a Turkish court to release Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turk who attempted to kill the late pope John Paul II in 1981.

"With legal issues, the Holy See leaves it up to the courts with competence in these areas," Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said.

He said the Vatican had only learned of the court's decision from press agencies and had not been given prior notice.

Agca, 48, is expected to be released between Tuesday and Sunday, Turkish officials told the Anatolia news agency.

He was a 23-year-old far-right militant on the run from the Turkish police when he opened fire on the head of the Roman Catholic Church at St. Peter's Square in Rome on May 13, 1981.

The pope suffered a serious wound to the abdomen and Agca spent the next 19 years in Italian prisons before being transferred to Turkey to complete his sentence.

John Paul II forgave his attacker and even met him in prison

On whose political spectrum, pray tell, is this guy considered "far-right?" Especially seeing as how he probably did this hit under orders from the USSR?

In the old Soviet Union, "far-right" meant staunch communist. Go figure!

"Thi is one of the reasons I like Executions. Tookie wont be set free."

And ole Tookie won't run up the tab and if there is no death bed conversion, he'll go straight to hell.

Forgiveness is fine but crime must be PUNISHED to the fullest. People are confusing forgiveness with punishment. The two are distinctly different. I can easily forgive my daughter for something she has done but still there are consequences (punishment) for bad behavior.

Joaquin Navarro-Valls

There's a name I hadn't seen in a while. I thought he left after JPII died.
