My question is why are Catholic children less likely to oppose abortions? The Church is point blank clear about its stance on abortion and about why it takes this stance. Is it just because more Catholics are centered in the northeast?
I think it is because of the collapse of religious instruction in the Church since the 1960s. Today, Catholic children--even in religious schools--sit through meaningless feel-good lessons about how God loves us no matter what. That same bland message, with an occasional plug for "social justice," is the substance of most homilies as well. Not surprisingly, we have a whole generation that attends church off-and-on, excuses any and every sin of a sexual nature, and generally has no clue what Catholic moral teaching is about. It's Ted Kennedy Catholicism--and it's not confined to the liberal northeast.
