NORFOLK, Va. - Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson suggested Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine punishment for "dividing God's land."
"God considers this land to be his," Robertson said on his TV program "The 700 Club." "You read the Bible and he says `This is my land,' and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, `No, this is mine.'"
Sharon, who ordered Israel's withdrawal from Gaza last year, suffered a severe stroke on Wednesday.
In Robertson's broadcast from his Christian Broadcasting Network in Virginia Beach, the evangelist said he had personally prayed about a year ago with Sharon, whom he called "a very tender-hearted man and a good friend." He said he was sad to see Sharon in this condition.
He also said, however, that in the Bible, the prophet Joel "makes it very clear that God has enmity against those who 'divide my land.'"
Sharon "was dividing God's land and I would say woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the EU ( European Union), the United Nations, or the United States of America," Robertson said.
In discussing what he said was God's insistence that Israel not be divided, Robertson also referred to the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who had sought to achieve peace by giving land to the Palestinians. "It was a terrible thing that happened, but nevertheless he was dead," he said.
The Anti-Defamation League issued a statement urging Christian leaders to distance themselves from the remarks. Robertson made similar comments as the Gaza withdrawal occurred, it said.
"It is outrageous and shocking, but not surprising, that Pat Robertson once again has suggested that God will punish Israel's leaders for any decision to give up land to the Palestinians," said Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the group, which fights anti-Semitism. "His remarks are un-Christian and a perversion of religion. Unlike Robertson, we don't see God as cruel and vengeful."
The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said a religious leader "should not be making callous political points while a man is struggling for his life."
"Pat Robertson has a political agenda for the entire world, and he seems to think God is ready to take out any world leader who stands in the way of that agenda," Lynn said in a statement.
Robertson spokeswoman Angell Watts said of critics who challenged his remarks, "What they're basically saying is, `How dare Pat Robertson quote the Bible?'"
"This is what the word of God says," Watts said. "This is nothing new to the Christian community."
In August, Robertson suggested on "The 700 Club" that American agents should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who has long been at odds with U.S. foreign policy. Robertson later apologized for his remarks, saying he "spoke in frustration."
>Anyone who claims to have the ability to steer hurricanes either has a mental illness or is lying.<
Intentionly attributing a statement to someone that they never made is also lying. If you don't believe God respond's to the prayers of his people I feel sorry for you.
I am not supporting Robertson.I am just pointing out that the name calling and lewd language being used to attack another Christian is wrong in itself but as an ordained minister of the Gospel their is a special admonition from God not to attack him.
>Since the new covenant Jesus made it plain that land was no longer of any consequence as Jesus explained to the woman by the well, that the Father must be worshiped in spirit and in truth. (Jno 4:21-24) Pat, along with most presumed Christian religious leaders, does not walk by faith.<
So you believe God has gone back on his Oath to Abraham and his seed?
Did you ever participate in the "abuzz" forum in the NYT?
That "oath" to Abraham was nailed to a cross. But, thats not really as important as Jesus saying that anyone who refused Him as Savior would be condemned. Sorry, but Jews arent saved simply because theyre Jewish. if they reject his Son, theyre no better off than Muslims. Read Mark 16:16.

I hope you are not expousing that old heresy of replacement theology. The new covenant in no way abolishes Gods promise that Israel was given to the Jews forever and they are God's chosen people.
Gen 26:2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
Gen 26:3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
Gen 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
Geez I wish he would just shut the f'ck up once and for all. He's the true village idiot of the United States.

Please provide the verse(s) that support the assuration that That "oath" to Abraham was nailed to a cross
Sorry, but Jews arent saved simply because theyre Jewish.
They may not know that the Name of their Messiah is Y'shua. Psalm 106:4 Remember me, YHvH, in Your favor toward Your people; Visit me with Your Y'shua
b'shem Y'shua
The land promise was fulfilled. To understand the "seed" read Galatians 3:16-29. It does not refer to fleshly Israel. Romans 9:6-7. Regards.
Pat Robertson is crazy. Crazy like a fox . . .
He knows exactly what he is doing, and he does it well. He is trying to intimidate any Israeli PM from carving up Israel in a so called land for peace scheme, and his statements further his agenda.
Agree with him or not, Old Pat is one shrewd guy.
Sorry, but Jews arent saved simply because theyre Jewish.

Can someone tell me how a Christian would believe they're "saved" at all. Isn't Judaism a religion that rejects Christ completely?
Even Islam regards Jesus as a prophet.
Anyway, ordained ministers of the Gospel are not immune to being called out when they stray. Look to the recent problems of the Catholic church. Look at Rev. Al Sharpton. I'm going to call them all out when I disagree with them, ordained or not.
And if Robertson never claimed he had special powers of hurricanes and steered them away, then it is ignorance on my part. "Bad intelligence".
When all is said and done, I hope Pat takes Bush's lead and prays for Sharon.
He has had mining concessions under several African dictators. I believe some in Sierra Leone and one in Zaire (I think). Friends have included Mobutu and Charles Taylor (or an opposing genocidal dictator, they all merge into one).
He used his name to support all kinds of wicked people.

Open mouth, insert foot.....
Hey Pat!
"I got news for you, pal. You ain't leading but two things right now: Jack and Sh**. And, Jack left town." Ash Williams "Army of Darkness"
"I'm sorry, but I find it astounding that so many conservatives expect the State of Israel to be a western-style secular democracy whose policies have no more metaphysical ramifications than any other country.
The reason for PM Sharon's being stricken are known to G-d alone, but Rev. Robertson is being more of a true religious Zionist than his detractors."
Right you are. It always amazes me what comes out of the woodworks on a thread when Pat Roberton says what many others think. Take, for instance, assassinating the Venezuelan president, Chavez, taking him out before he does serious harm to the whole of Latin America. I'll bet you a lot of the people on FR think the same, including me. And, coincidental but true, something bad has happened to Israeli prime ministers who give territory away to others. And, biblically, there are warnings about what will happen if you go up against the land of Israel and try to do it in. As someone earlier said, it's either in the bible or it isn't.
Pat Robertson is getting old, and probably not as careful in his remarks as he should be, but, because of his age, he is at a point where he can pretty well say what he wants to. That happens a lot when you get older, you don't care anymore what others think about what you say. But the MSM does. They love to take any little tidbit Pat says on his show and blow it up to gigantic proportions and then make fun of him and his remarks so that they can further denigrate Christianity and its proponents. To make Christians look like fools.
The secular press is the problem here, not what Pat Robertson, whose been off the mainstream stage for quite a while now, says. To further advance their secular viewpoints they go after him. Don't shoot the messenger, shoot the MSM, the real villain. Pat has his own Christian show that frequently discusses world issues from his religion's point of view, and they are talking to their own people, their co-religionists. Pat isn't talking to the nation as a whole, he's talking to his own audience about their own religious beliefs. The MSM lies in wait to broadcast anything even mildly controversial they think he says, and then hack away some more on their favorite past time, knocking religion.
Bottom line, leave Pat alone. He's become, along with Jerry Falwell, two men who have done a ton of good works in their lifetimes, the butt boy of the press. If you can't figure that out, there aren't as many astute Freepers as I thought there were. Realize the real enemy, and Pat isn't it.
"He knows exactly what he is doing, and he does it well. He is trying to intimidate any Israeli PM from carving up Israel in a so called land for peace scheme, and his statements further his agenda."
Exactly. Bingo, you get the door prize.
Considering he's had some of his beliefs long before he ran for President back in the 80s, I'd say no. Flipping by the show a couple of weeks ago while on vacation, I heard him lay out his plan for making cigarettes illegal. Just shook my head and turned the station. Pat's not all there and hasn't been for awhile
pull my finger :)
