If the Republicans had the brass cojones the Dem'crats have so often displayed, they would take the "contributions" offered and vote against what the lobbyist is striving to get passed into law.

The Dem'crats do it differently. They promise not to prosecute the lobbyists (through prosecutors they have lovingly planted and tended over the years within the Justice Department) who are operating outside the letter of the law in exchange for these same contributions.

This is widely practiced at the state level, as well. Consider Ronnie Earle and Eliot Spitzer.

Gingrich told reporters he thinks Republicans should elect a permanent replacement for DeLay. In addition to links with Abramoff, the Texan is battling campaign finance charges in his home state of Texas but hopes to regain his leadership post.

The Jack Abramoff situation brings out the whole "lobbying" industry into the light of day.

The term "to lobby" arose from the practice of buttonholing politicians in the lobby or corridor of legislative halls on their way to vote to persuade them to vote a certain way.

Lobbying can be beneficial if the driving force is not money. If money is offered for an explicit or implicit agreement to perform some legislation then it is clearly bribery.

The sale of Prozac has tripled in Washington since Abramoff agreed to name the Congressmen he has bribed.

Notice how quiet the usual political attack dogs are about the Abramoff deal. They do not want to stir up this can of worms. Almost every politician is guilty of accepting lobby money. If not money, favors, gifts, or the hiring of a color-blind wife as a fashion consultant.

Lobbyists are so numerous in Washington that they far outnumber legislators. The drug industry alone have over 600 lobbyists. Every interest from llama herders to pickle-packers to government agencies and foreign countries have their lobbyists. The only people not represented by lobbyists is the average American.
