With O’Reilly as Guest, Very Serious Letterman Denounces Iraq War & Hails Sheehan
NewsBusters ^ | January 3, 2006 | Brent Baker

Posted on 01/03/2006 9:20:35 PM PST by PJ-Comix

Displaying a hostility to President Bush and the Iraq war similar to that expressed by Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart, on tonight’s Late Show David Letterman will go further than I’ve ever heard him in revealing his derision for President Bush’s decision to launch the Iraq war. I know this thanks to the “Big Show Highlight," a two-minute streaming-only RealPlayer preview of tonight’s program, which is now featured on the Late Show’s home page.

In the posted clip, Letterman mockingly tells guest Bill O’Reilly: "The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?" Letterman demands: “Why the Hell are we there to begin with?" When O’Reilly points out that the British, Russians and Egyptians also presumed Iraq had WMD, Letterman retorts: “Well then that makes it all right?" Turning unusually serious, Letterman soon lectures: “I'm very concerned about people like yourself who don't have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ. Honest to Christ." That prompts O’Reilly to contend: “No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter' on my program." To which Letterman fires back: “I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap.” After the show airs in an hour, I will update this item with more from the Letterman/O’Reilly exchange, including a video clip. (Transcript of RealPlayer excerpt follows.)

It took me a while, but I managed to take down this transcript from the two-minute streaming RealPlayer “Big Show Highlight” video clip on the Late Show home page:

David Letterman: “The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?”

Bill O’Reilly: “No.”

Letterman: “No, it was the intelligence gathered by his administration.”

O’Reilly: “By the CIA.”

Letterman: “Yeah, so why are we there in the first place? I agree to you, with you that we have to support the troops. They are there, they are the best and the brightest of this country. [audience applause] There’s no doubt about that. And I also agree that now we’re in it it’s going to take a long, long time. People who expect it’s going to be solved and wrapped up in a couple of years, unrealistic, it’s not going to happen. However, however, that does not eliminate the legitimate speculation and concern and questioning of ‘Why the Hell are we there to begin with?’”

O’Reilly: “If you want to question that, and then re-vamp an intelligence agency that’s obviously flawed, the CIA, okay. But remember, MI-6 in Britain said the same thing. Putin’s people in Russia said the same thing, and so did Mubarak’s intelligence agency in Egypt.”

Letterman: “Well then that makes it all right?”

O’Reilly: “No it doesn’t make it right.”

Letterman: “That intelligence agencies across the board makes it alright that we’re there?”

O’Reilly: “It doesn’t make it right.”

Letterman: “See, I’m very concerned about people like yourself who don’t have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ.” [audience applause]

O’Reilly: “No, I’m sorry.”

Letterman: “Honest to Christ.”

“O’Reilly: “No way. [waits for applause to die down] No way you’re going to get me, no way that a terrorist who blows up women and children.”

Letterman: “Do you have children?”

O’Reilly: “Yes I do. I have a son the same age as yours. No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter’ on my program.” [mild audience applause]

Letterman: “I’m not smart enough to debate you point to point on this, but I have the feeling, I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap. [audience laughter] But I don’t know that for a fact. [more audience applause]

O'Reilly is okay to a point but he's not the best debater out there. Just shows you how stupid Letterman is--he thinks O'Reilly outsmarted him with his points. Letterman would be speechless if he went up against a Medved for instance.

I just saw it. It was truly embarassing for Letterman, who came off as childish, ill informed, and arrogant. I'm not a big O'Reilly fan, but I'd have to say he held his own in hostile territory.

Maybe nobody else noticed it, but I think that Letterman's producers cut that segment short because Letterman was getting his ass handed to him...if someone has the replay, I'd swear that Letterman heard something in his earpiece or saw something offstage that said "CUT!!!!!", and abrubptly ended the segment.

O'Reilly could and should have responded with the fact that Bill Clinton wanted regime change in Iraq and bombed the crap out of Baghdad while he was in the process of getting impeached.

The whole thing was just nasty and I'm glad Bill gave Dave what for as much as he did. Dave's hairpiece is smarter than he is.

Just saw it on the West coast. I am outraged! If I was O'relly I would have walked off, after throwing my coffee in the jerks face! ......Letterman clearly was planning to ambush him ,cause even before O'reilly came on he was making really snide remarks about him!....I feel a lot of this is anger against Fox news taking all the network audiences away from the likes of Letterman!

Medved never comes off as full of himself and is always a gentlemen with those he debates.
O'R is an ass, but his points were correct tonight.
Even on the Christmas political correct issue O'R was talking about Letterman was calling him a liar.
People may dislike O'R for good reasons (I stopped watching him years ago), but he was correct on the points he made to Letterman.

How to talk to a liberal Letterman? It was like having a South Park character hosting the Late Night show, no facts, all irrational hate and emotion.

I didn't see the whole segment when it was on TV but someone on FR just pointed out that Letterman stirred whatever was in O'Reilly's coffee mug with his pencil. This was just before O'Reilly came out. Some in the audience laughed when O'Reilly said, "Is this mine?" and drank it.

Rush was on about 8 years ago and Letterman wiped the floor up with him. Limbaugh wasn't prepared for his sarcastic humor and it had Rush completely off balance.

O'Reilly smacked Letterman around pretty good today though. Letterman when confronted with facts did what most liberals do, claimed the fact must be wrong. Offered no evidence that his facts were wrong, just said he had that "feeling".

Letterman is was exposed as an idiot tonight.

Bill Clinton was before 9-11 no matter what he wanted.
In the present world where Bush and others decided to go into Iraq, many high countries had the same evidence regarding 9/11 and WMD.

Regarding that being wrong, even the 9-11 commission report could not prove WMD were not moved before we got there, they can only say they weren't there when we finally arrived on the scene.

Financing death in Israel and trying to assassinate a USA President was more than enough reason to remove the bastard after 11 years of drama.

I didn't watch that closely. But I'm sure that probably is true. Liberals like Letterman are just the type of people that would urinate in the office coffee pot and then smile as they watched you drink it.What a disgusting person he is!

Medved never comes off as full of himself and is always a gentlemen with those he debates.

I don't know how Medved does it because I've heard people say the rudest things to him but usually he just keeps to the point he is trying to make and doesn't take the bait. The only time I remember him getting really angry is when some college aged twit was talking about WWII and he let her have it and called her "scum". O'Reilly isn't my favorite anymore, but I do give him credit tonight--he didn't go off when Letterman was being incredibly rude.

I think he is a near intellectual equal to Rush. The man is brilliant, he is just not into theatrics or making his guests look bad. He doesn't set people up.
He has no thrill exposed in being right and doesn't try to one-up someone else.

I have heard Medved in Person when he spoke to a Republican Jewish group here in San Diego.
I think he is a nice guy that knows what he is talking about.

George Galloway thought he was being set up by Medved for attack. Of course he is a delusional terrorist loving "scum".
