He wasn't very clever. He wasn't very nice. And he's been trying to make it up to a certain red-haired columnist ever since.
MAUREEN DOWD doesn't like me. This is not unusual. But unlike a lot of people, the New York Times columnist has a good reason.

She is one unhappy person. That's certainly the impression I get ... but if this writer really admires her, they could be unhappy together :-).

This is the comment that caused the trouble:
"...Goulet read Dowd's column to me out loud, in a Broadway baritone that made it sound like the tale of the knights of the Round Table. Next to nearly every sentence he had jotted "Wow!" Unfortunately, in my column I described Goulet's outpouring of love as "giving her more wows than Michael Douglas ever did." Douglas is Dowd's ex-boyfriend and current legal guardian to Catherine Zeta-Jones."

Along the same lines, it's quite possible that she can't help that she's an unlovable shrew.

Maybe she's actually keeping the wine.
Did he ever think about that?
If I had a dimwit sending me bottles of wine I wouldn't accept his apology either.

in my column I described Goulet's outpouring of love as "giving her more wows than Michael Douglas ever did." Douglas is Dowd's ex-boyfriend and current legal guardian to Catherine Zeta-Jones. This, as you probably noticed, was not a particularly clever joke. It also was not that nice. These are things that Maureen Dowd noticed as well. She immediately called a colleague of mine and complainedIf true, this is extremely ironic. What is it about these columnists that make them believe they can say any castigating thing they want about people far more deserving of respect than they are and, in turn, be so thin skinned as to complain about it when the tables are turned? The hypocrisy is amazing.

Oh I think that he was being more than a bit sarcastic when he'd confessed that he'd written that she got more Wows from Robert Goulet than she ever had from Michael Douglas.

Sorry, yes she can. She's not responsible for where she started, although having read an email from her brother when she was complaining about family at Christmas, he would be a better columnist for the NYT than she is (note- he is conservative).
But at this age, it's up to her to either deal with her problems or not. Instead she is living the life she knows (and doesn't like) as opposed to finding the one she doesn't and might actually like. I'm not talking about changing jobs, but about changing her perspective.

So that she would be angry and unable to walk? Come on, there's so much that she's answerable for, why pick on something she can't do anything about? :-)
