I hope Richmond cops and VA state police have gotten better at solving crimes since the murders in '97 of all those schoolgirls, by a serial killer. They botched up that investigation badly. And the Richmond crime lab screwed up all the DNA tests and other forensics.

Where's Kay Scarpetta when you need her?

The bit about the mother appearing ashen and nervous... seems to put it all in an even more bizarre category. Except maybe not... It was New Years day... She could have just been out late overdoing things at the husbands band gig. She might have been hungover and sick and the villians weren't even there yet.

Your take on it is probably correct.

The witness described her as "nervous" only after she knew that the family had been murdered. There's no way to be certain whether she really was nervous, or simply had that projected upon her after the fact. My money is on the latter.

And, for the record, I seriously doubt that the killers will be Muslim, or even remotely connected to Islam. It'll be drugs.

We're right a disturbingly high percentage of the time - but not always...

I'd be very interested in seeing a documented record of what you classify as a "disturbingly high percentage." Almost all of the dark predictions of Muslim involvement I've seen here at FR turn out to be wrong.

We also have a new Governor who is "personally opposed" to the death penalty.

It's that "throat slit" thing that makes you wonder.
But you knew that. ;-)

I'd define disturbingly high as anything more than, say, 3 times their percentage in the general population.

And no, I haven't been keeping a formal score, but I suspect you may be, so what do your figures say?

Hey Linda, as I said, there's always someone who wants to rub your nose in it. May I offer r9etb as exhibit 'A'?

I read that article yesterday-heartbreaking. All four with slit throats. So very, very sad. Being from the Richmond area, I am saddened by the crime in the city. I can remember when my Mom would put me on the bus in Highland Springs and I would meet my grandmother "under the clock" in town.

I was 10 and not the only child to ride the bus alone. A different world.

It also reminds me of a case in Central NY which happened several years ago, during the Holiday Season. The Mother mentioned in that story is now free, walking the streets of Atlanta because the State Police felt they needed a fingerprint on a gas can.

It was not a good time for the State Troopers, several from different parts of the state went to jail for falsifying evidence.

(But to be clear, I am not bashing the Troopers-a few bad apples) Link to cached page:

That's exactly what I thought was strange. Almost as if the killer/killers told her to get rid of whoever it was upstairs or he/they'd kill the rest of her family.

I haven't kept track, either. I do recall a couple of specific examples, though. For example, the Coptic couple last summer(?) -- slit throats, the whole deal. Who was it? Drug dealers, not Muslims. There was the British guy who was beheaded in the street -- by a guy who was insane, though not Muslim.

Hey Linda, as I said, there's always someone who wants to rub your nose in it. May I offer r9etb as exhibit 'A'?

I asked for a good definition of terms, and citations in support of your confident assertions -- if your inability to back up your claims is "rubbing your nose in it," then I plead GUILTY AS CHARGED. But then, like the puppy on the rug, you will have deserved it.

"Am I becoming biased (more biased?) or does this already tell us something important about the potential list of suspects?"

All we can truly conclude from this is that guns don't kill people, people with knives do. We all (well many of us) thought that the Coptic Christian family (also parents and two girls) were murderd by Muslims but it turned out they were killed by the Irish-American criminal who lived upstairs from them.

It seems like it couldn't really have been a stranger, certainly not a horde of strangers, as it appears this happened sometime sunday morning, when neighbors would have been home. I'd think anything untoward would have been noticed.

Very sick to kill two little girls. A four year old, disgusting!

*shrug* You recall TWO cases where we assumed incorrectly that it was møøslimbs.

Pretty thin statistics.

And for what it's worth, I did define my terms.

Care to share a rug?

----That's what I was thinking. It would be one reason and a darn good one for the way she was acting.

did you catch that last fact - the killer(s) used a knife they obtained inside the house - they did not (apparently) go to the house with a weapon (at least not the murder weapon) from what Nancy is saying.

It takes a certain type of person to cut a throat, not your everyday killer. IMHO this person has killed before . Now, what could be a possible motive?? Drugs, loansharking debt, blackmail......

Just thinking here: Mom and Dad were at the New Year's gig; Stella was overnighting at a girlfriend's house. Who was babysitting the younger child?

Could it be one of those cases where the babysitter let in a boyfriend who planned a burglary and was perhaps caught in the act when the couple came home earlier than expected?

This is a puzzling case. The family was very much loved and respected in the community. I would tend to rule out drugdealers, blackmailers, etc.

As N. Grace pointed out, there are eerie similarities to the Groene case out west.
