Strayhorn, aka Scott's Mommy, to run as an Eye ("I")

The Quorum Report says today that TX comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn will run for governor as an independent.

Strayhorn, a former Dem, had hinted of an independent bid and as recently as Friday, her campaign refused to say what her party allegiance would be come today, which marks the filing deadline in TX.

Strayhorn is the mother of WH press sec. Scott McClellan.

Dems Chris Bell and Bob Gammage are on the line to challenge GOP Gov. Rick Perry; satirist Kinky Friedman has filed to run as an independent.

There's no guanratee that either Strayhorn or Friedman will land on the ballot; the requirements for ballot access are expensive and onerous for independents in TX.

But -- in one way, Strayhorn's decision confers an advantage. Candidates wanting to run as independents must gather about 46,000 signatures from the pool of voters who don't vote in the primaries. Since the Strayhorn/Perry primary would have been the only race to trigger high turnout, a competition-less GOP primary will enlarge the pool of voters from which Strayhorn and Friedman can collect names.

Our question: can they legally work together? Can one person legally sign a petition for both Friedman and Strayhorn?

Perry leads comfortably in all head-to-head polls but his approval rating is below fifty percent, a sign of vulnerability. He is more popular than he used to be among conservative Texans, who make up between 35-45 percent of the electorate and more in the GOP primary.

Is McClellan on our team or not? It seems like his mother isn't.

Translation: Still a Dem, but now under an alias.

Kinky is even more disturbing than Strayhorn. He used to be a singer but his voice is gone, his writing ability is so-so, his looks are gone (he never really had any) so he can't find a rich woman to marry. All he can think of is to run for Gov. Can't someone give this creep a job so he will drop out of the race?

Kinky is just simply an a-hole in a cowboy hat with too much time on his hands.

She had better run as an 'I' because no one would believe she a 'R'. Except 'RINO's

I will certainly agree with that. I met him at a book signing and he was rude and obnoxious, while trying to be funny, I guess. He had his sidekick Little Jewford, with him. He was even more rude and obnoxious than Kinky.

Lots of conservatives in Texas were once Democrats, including Rick Perry.

I wish Bush would just fire McClellan. I don't care if he donated money or whatever to Bush's campaign. The guy has no media skills. Michael Brown would do a better job.

Our question: can they legally work together? Can one person legally sign a petition for both Friedman and Strayhorn?

Texas Election Code answers this question...

§ 141.066. SIGNING MORE THAN ONE PETITION PROHIBITED. (a) A person may not sign the petition of more than one candidate for the same office in the same election.
(b) The following statement must appear at the top of each page of a petition: "Signing the petition of more than one candidate for the same office in the same election is prohibited."
(c) A signature on a candidate's petition is invalid if the signer signed the petition subsequent to signing a petition of another candidate for the same office in the same election.
Acts 1985, 69th Leg., ch. 211, § 1, eff. Jan. 1, 1986. Amended by Acts 1997, 75th Leg., ch. 864, § 94, eff. Sept. 1, 1997.

Ditto that. Scott is pathetic. Always looks like a deer caught in the headlights.

If I am forced to decide between Rylander/Keeton/Strayhorn (Sounds like an ambulance chasing Law Firm) and Kinky, I would go with Kinky. He may be an a##, but he's at least an a## that has expressed some views and kinda stuck with them.

Rylander/Keeton/Strayhorn (I hope I got them in the right order for this week) will say and do anything to gain political power. Unfortunately she probably has enough dirt on her fellow politicians to actually enact some of the crap she is talking about.

Friedman, if elected by some miracle, would be blocked at every turn by the politicians in the Leg. and the state offices. Gridlock-not such a bad thing.

Perry is no prize, but the other choices are steaming turds.

Difference between Friedman and Keeton/Rylander/McClellan/Braying A##Horn: Kinky is a steaming turd that would be hermetically sealed. One tough Grandma would be allowed in the open air to stink

What would you think of Perry if he dedicated a new mosque in your neighborhood?

Strayhorn is not going to WIN under any party... imho.

I don't trust her or like her.

My vote will go to Perry.
