Bush foes face legal, political hurdles as they raise specter of impeachment

WASHINGTON (AP): It's an explosive word that faded from the American political lexicon after Bill Clinton's presidency. But, cautiously, a few Democrats are whispering it again.

Impeachment.

Could President George W. Bush be impeached _ tried by Congress and possibly removed from office _ for letting an intelligence agency spy in the United States without getting court approval?

That appears highly unlikely. It's debatable whether Bush broke any laws. Any decision to impeach would have to be made by Congress, which is controlled by Bush's Republican Party. And if Democrats pressed the matter, they would be taking a huge political gamble that could backfire.

That hasn't stopped a handful of Democrats from raising the matter. Sen. Barbara Boxer of California released a letter asking four presidential scholars for their opinion on whether Bush had committed an impeachable offense. Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, introduced legislation calling on Congress to determine whether there are grounds for impeachment. Some Americans have written to their local newspapers, demanding impeachment.

Most Democrats, though, have been silent.

Some Americans have written to their local newspapers, demanding impeachment.

And, astonishingly, all the letters read exactly the same.

This "news story" is even worse than the usual AP tripe. And that's saying something.

So the Democrats want to rerun the 1998 election? They're welcome to it. There's nothing that will turn off people more than relentless personal attacks on the President. And this from party with no ideas on how to advance the country's well-being in wartime.

What is scary is the spinelessness of the Congress GOP is what invites those kinds of treasonous bragging rights measures from dems.

With enemies like this, who needs friends!

The handful of Dems are not just some fringe group, well they are actually a fringe group but are also party "leaders."

Lately, the Repubs have lost their way (i.e. smaller government, social security, ANWR drilling, etc.) but this is just the kind of stunt that could help them hold or gain in 2006. I say go Dems go! If they start a web page I will donate some money. The more these moonbats make impeachment the issue rather than fighting the terrorists their chances of controlling any branch of government is hopeless.

As Ann Coulter put it the other day, and this is not an exact quote: "The Democrats want to impeach the president for listening in on terrorist cell phone calls after 911."

That about sums it up, and I fervently hope the rats take that to the American people. Please bring it on.

They are just arrogant and power-hungry and dumb enough to do it.

The newspaper is a Norwegian rag,

Thanks and I even went to the University of Oslo for a college program (taught in English) in the 60's.

About all I remember how to say is 'my glass is empty.' LOL

I'll say this again: If anything that the 'Rats have been accusing Bush of that deserves impeachment it would be for Bush "lying" to get us into the war with Iraq.

This fact has been too obvious to me but seemingly neglected by a lot of pundits and FReepers. If Bush indeed "lied" to get us into a war then Bush is a war criminal and DESERVES to be impeached.

Of course we all know that's not true. And if the 'Rats now want to change the subject to impeach Bush over wire taps we should be all over them demanding that they explain why they won't impeach Bush over Iraq.

The 'Rats will do nothing but sink lower and lower into cynicism, absurdity and moral irrelevance, and Bush needs to call them on it.
