I had to travel through central, eastern & southern France earlier this month. During the check in at each hotel, the clerk went out of his / her way to cautioned me on what areas were not patrolled by the police and where the "local youths" tended to go. I was in Europe just before the French vote on the EU constitution and watched (on TV) Chirac's town-hall meeting with about 100 French youth. There were a few "people of color" but most were white. They all complained about the economy. A recently graduated lawyer was unemployed. A recently graduated accountant was working at a supermarket checkout. An auto worker had just seen his job moved to Slovakia. The French government had better worry about the problems of the majority youth and not just the thugs who burn automobiles.
