HERDON, Va. (AP) - The town of Herndon will stop using any portion of its recently opened day-laborer center on Loudoun County land under an agreement with county officials.
The publicly funded center has been operating for about a week in a former police station that straddles the line between Loudoun and Herndon.
The town will block off one entrance to the center as well as part of the parking lot by January first.
Loudoun County Administrator Kirby Bowers asked Herndon Town Manager Stephen Owen this week to shut down the controversial center because it does not comply with county zoning. Bowers had threatened to take the town to court if it did not comply.
Opponents of illegal immigration believe the site encourages employers to hire illegal workers and avoid paying market wages. Supporters of the site say it provides a controlled environment for workers and employers to meet.
So, it is a center promoting illegal activity by promoting work for illegal aliens, and, it is in violation of zoning ordinances. How is it that this center is not shut down now?!?!
A controlled environment for workers and employers to meet... jail.
"controlled" The favorite word of .................??"
ping...
Because half of the property is in the town, which has it's own zoning (which was changed to allow it).
The other half the propery is in the county, which doesn't want the center and won't change the zoning.
Herndon put it here because it is as far away from the city residents as it can be, to minimize the opposition.
Bad things often end up on boundaries for this reason, you have fewer people surrounding the property who have a say in the matter.

Smugglers Selling Sick Puppies From Mexico
Smugglers are buying puppies at rock-bottom prices in Mexico and selling them in the United States for up to $1,000, often to owners who later discover the canines are too sick or too young to survive on their own, authorities said.
The Border Puppy Task Force _ a group of 18 animal control and health agencies and animal protection groups _ said Tuesday a two-week operation at San Diegos two border crossings confirmed what they long suspected: Mexico is a breeding ground for unscrupulous puppy peddlers.
"Its a profit-driven practice, its a disturbing practice," said Capt. Aaron Reyes, director of operations at the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority in Los Angeles County.
From Dec. 5 through Sunday, agents at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa border crossings ordered vehicles carrying anything with "feathers, fleas, fur or fangs" to a separate area for more thorough inspections, Reyes said.
The searches turned up 362 puppies under 3 months old, 155 between 3 and 6 months and 1,061 adult dogs. Canines were found in trunks and under seats. (snip)http://apnews.fimc.net/showarticlewptf.asp?id=445254&url=www.wptf.com&site=wptfam&catg=headlines_us&headlines=1&images=1&show=5&w=350url
Last I heard, opposition was running around 80% (Herndon town residents) against the work center for illegal aliens. I'm fairly local - across the Potomac in Maryland. We've been promoting illegal alien work for years already... (It really sucks living in Ultraliberalland. Of course I can't complain about the recent doubling of prices for my real estate here)
Herndon should set up a store for the sick, and soon to die, puppies.
Amazing. My county gov did something right for a change. Score one for Kirby...
