This is true. On his daily walks in Rome, as Cardinal, he would take food to some of the stray cats in the area. I believe I read that he has a cat with him in the Pope's private quarters.
When I was in Rome in 2001, there was a lady bringing cat food to the cats that live in and around the Coliseum. (Yes, I gave her some money.)
