FALLUJAH, Iraq (Dec. 16, 2005) -- More than 30 Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 8, 2nd Marine Logistics Group (Forward), served in direct support of Operation Liberty Express at the Combined Military Operations Camp here Dec. 13-15.
Their role was essential for the transportation of election supplies from the printer to the camp, where Iraqi Police and members of the Independent Election Committee of Iraq picked up and escorted the supplies, including ballots, and dispersed them to various polling sites in the city of Fallujah. After the polls closed, the Marines then helped secure and ship the ballots to Baghdad for tallying.
The Marines of 2nd MLG (Fwd) and other service members joined forces for a team effort to ensure success for a free and democratic Iraq in this countrys third and most pivotal election to date.
The election in Fallujah is ever more significant where, a little over a year ago, this war torn city was in control of the insurgency.
It shows that people are getting out, and trying to fight for democracy instead of each other, said Lance Cpl. Joseph A. Hume, an ammo technician and participant in Operation Liberty Express.
Many of the Marines feel tremendous optimism on the side of the Iraqis concerning the outcome of the elections.
From what I have seen they seem happy and look forward to getting to vote, Hume said.
The people of Iraq voiced their desire for a free Iraq through the lengthy lines seen in the streets on election day. Many also spoke of the future they intend for their country.
People [who are] in Fallujah are tired [of the] fighting, said Abdul, an Iraqi Police Officer. We [are] happy [to] vote.
Many of the local and coalition leaders expressed the importance of the Iraqis taking the lead and organizing the elections by themselves.
Them handling the elections themselves is important for legitimacy, said Maj. Christopher Sutton, CLB-8 executive officer. It legitimizes their democratic government, and shows that Americans had no hand in their election process.
Iraqi' win again!
