Christmas By Song

*Angels We Have Heard On High*

Background Info:
This traditional French Christmas carol (Les Anges dans nos Campagnes) is based on Luke 2:20 which reads: “Then the shepherds went back again to their fields and flocks, praising God for the visit of the angels, and because they had seen the child, just as the angel had told them.” It was translated from French to English by James Chadwick (1813-1882) and appeared in Crown of Jesus, 1862. The music, “Gloria (Barnes),” is a French carol melody; arranged by Edward Shippen. For more information, please click here. Warning: My popup blocker blocked something coming from this site. So? Be warned before you click.

The point of doing *Christmas By Song* is to give you a variety of artists doing the same Christmas song. We do have a huge selection to choose from. Due to space and time restraint, we are only providing a mini musical mixture!

101 Strings Blenders
Caribbean Steel Drums Cathedral City Project
Kitaro December People
Digital Orchestra Clancy Brothers

Christmas By Song

Away In A Manger

Background Info:
Protestant reformer Martin Luther is considered by some to be the composer of this carol, although without question the modern version comes from nineteenth-century American composer William James Kirkpatrick. The first two verses were by an anonymous author as part of the Little Children’s Book for Schools and Families by J. C. File, and the third verse is by John Thomas McFarland (1851-1913). Credit belongs here.

The first two verses of “Away in a Manger” were originally published in 1885 in a Lutheran schoolbook. James Murray published it in 1887 under the title of “Luther’s Cradle Hymn” leaving some people to think that Luther had written it. No one is certain who wrote the music, but it, too, is believed to be American.
Credit belongs here.

One of the great things about doing *Christmas By Song* is choosing the selections to put on this thread. However, it surely does zap a person's energy sometimes especially when they find themselves crying over songs. This is one of those for some reason for MoJo.

William James Kirkpatrick's original version Aled Jones
American Boychoir  Andre Kostelanetz
Andy Griffith & Elinor Donahue (TV) Anne Murray
The Beatles Charlie Sneller
Cristy Lane David Young
Gary Hoey Irish Rovers

Christmas By Song

*Deck The Halls*

Background Info:
An old Welsh melody is at the root of “Deck the Halls.” Although Mozart used the tune in a piano and violin piece in the 1700s, the words written in America would not come for almost another hundred years. Credit belongs here.

Americans strike again. Hehe! Ain't life grand?

Little Drummer Boy

Background Info:
Written by Katherine K. Davis
Davis's most famous composition, "Little Drummer Boy" (originally titled "The Carol of the Drum"), which she wrote in 1941, came to her while she was "...trying to take a nap." The words "...practically wrote themselves," she said. The song became famous when it was recorded by the Trapp Family Singers. Davis later quipped that it "...had been done to death on radio and TV." Credit belongs here.
