Want to bet that her cigarette habit was never an issue until the divorce?

Just wait for someone to agree and watch this thread take off. Smoking seems to be a touchy subject around here.

There was a good episode of Penn & Teller's Bullsh!t that showed the study used by second hand smoke opponents was flawed. That said, I don't smoke around my kids.

I think it's time to forbid violent moovies in homes. And we should have a violence tax on all Hollywood moovies. It's for the children and we're just trying to save lives...

In a highly publicized Virginia case, a judge barred Caroline County resident Tamara Silvius from smoking around her children as a condition for child visitation.

My mother never allowed my father, who was a smoker until recently, to smoke in our sight.

My dad would go to the grocery store to buy precisely one item every evening and take a ten-minute "walk" after every dinner.

I didn't realize why until I was in my teens.

I think my mom's policy was a good one.

I do not smoke in front of my kids. Nor drink. But the nazis need to stay out of our homes.

I hate smoke and I would like to see it banned in all public places. I've even been called an anti-smoking nazi by many on this forum.

HOWEVER

What you do in the privacy of your own home is your business.

This is going too far even for me.

I smoke cigars and several of my co-workers smoke cigarettes.

We had an interesting discussion with our boss this week.

She said to one of the group "you really ought to stop smoking".

My response: both of us smoke and I will compare our sick time with that of any of the non-smoking employees.

That conversation ended quickly. :-)

There was something in the news, months back, about smoking being banned on one of the turnpikes. I watched Shep Smith go NUTS about this on the air. His arguement? What's next? Are they going to ban Big Macs, too?

If they can stop people from smoking in their own homes 'for the children,' then they can regulate what people eat, drink, watch, listen to, etc. etc in their own homes 'for the children'.

The government needs to stay out of our affairs.

What about the dangers of poor diet, or of taking kids in cars on the freeways, or of watching junk on TV, or eating food cooked on Teflon, etc.?

I don't see where a Nanny state will lead to anywhere good in the long run; other than a place where no one can think for themselves.

"Parental smoking also has become a critical point in some child-custody cases, including ones in Virginia and Maryland."

You can add Arkansas to the list. And it isn't even just smoking around the children either. Just the other day, I was party to a hearing in which the parents were considered medically negligent because they continued to smoke when they had a premature infant. Now, for all these parents' issues, they did NOT smoke inside the home or around the baby. The home had no smell of smoke in it and was very clean. The judge ruled that the baby, because she was premature, did not need to be breathing in the smell of smoke on their clothes.

I was party to another case in which the grandmother of a child was denied custody because the child returned from a visit with the smell of smoke on her. The grandmother doesn't smoke.
