House approves border fence
THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | December 16, 2005 | By Stephen Dinan and Jerry Seper

Posted on 12/16/2005 6:56:01 AM PST by .cnI redruM

The House voted last night to build nearly 700 miles of fence along the U.S.-Mexico border as it began the first major floor debate in years on enforcing immigration laws. The vote, 260-159, came on an amendment to a border-security and employer-verification bill that is scheduled for a final vote today. Republican leaders appeared to have cleared a remaining hurdle last night by promising to remove language that said there should be a legal means for foreign workers to come and go. Some Republicans had argued that the provision, which was nonbinding, was a place-holder to attach a guest-worker plan in the future and thus was a deal-killer. On the fence construction vote, 49 Democrats joined 211 Republicans in supporting it while 12 Republicans joined the Democrats and one independent in voting against it.

Someone please remind this mediocrity that Santa Clause is utterly unfit for elective office.

"This bill steps on the spirit of Christmas for 11 million people," said Rep. Sam Farr, California Democrat.

Spirit of Christmas? But I thought that all democrats insisted that Church and State must be separated. Even if the bill steps on the Spirit of Christmas, the government should only be concerned about the Spirit of December 25.

You don't understand.

It is the goal of the democrats to for Americans to be Santa Claus to illegal immigrants with all the free benefits and in-state tuition we have to subsidize.

Gee, it breaks my heart that 11 million criminals might get treated like ..................... criminals. /sarc

I am very pleased to see 700 miles of fence make it into the bill. I bet that is giving President Bush some heartburn. I hope that JD Hayworth tells Vincete Fox to "shut up" again when he starts his inevitable whinging.

It will be interesting to see if it survives the conference with the Senate and to see if it gets funded.

An extreme measure, but these are extreme times.

I wonder if it will be constructed with illegal labor?

"People will escape from Mexico and the southern border. This will only injure the relationships and cause no greater security," said Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, Texas Democrat.

Another demonstration of command of the English language by the original "Moonbat".

I'm fine with them using illegals to help build the fence....as long as they do their side of the border work and stay on that side when the final links are connected.

"Border fence"? We need a variation of the Berlin Wall that would, instead of aiming it's guns at those trying to get out, would aim them the other way.

It will be VERY interesting....especially when the two Democrap liberal Senators from California cast their votes.

Getting the money attached to the fence will be a significant fight. The marks on that bill will have to be closely followed.
