This is the article I mentioned.  WaPo requires a breif registration, but it's probably worth it unless you have idealistic reasons for not doing so.

Given the WOT and the fact that not a single specific charge has been made AND given that several members of Congress on both sides were made aware of this BEFORE it began indicates that it was within the right of the Gov't to carry out these operations. There have been no complaints to date, not a single one from a Democratic Party that will simply make up sh*t to throw at this president if it cannot find any that exists.

Would you have the gov't now reveal WHO it eavesdropped on and why? Everything you say is true but nothing in any of the articles shows that any laws were broken only that "maybe" they were. So what is it, do we operate clandestinely to defeat the savages or should we just surrender today and save a lot of money, not to mention get more people around the world to "like" us?

If I deposit $15,000 cash in my checking account, it gets reported to the government. But if I'm on the phone every day consulting with al Qaeda leaders abroad, the government doesn't have a right to listen in? What's wrong with this picture?

What a Piece of S*** story. The NSA is protecting our lives,

Right on, Bro...I'm with you.

We can't let quaint ideas like probable cause get in the way.

For instance, I went down to the local police station and demanded a body cavity search. You never know what some Muslim has hidden there in your sleep.

The Muslims would prefer you enter the police station without a head, never mind your cavities.

Democrats should be clamoring to find out who the leak of National Security Secrets is. This is TREASON! GOP Should likewise, be seeking this source with all intents and purpose.

Maybe, but all they have to do is get a warrant. Is it terribly hard to get a warrant? I don't understand the need for this authorization when domestic spying is already legal with a warrant. I'm not being argumentative I'm asking a serious question that maybe someone who knows more about intelligence can help me with. Why the need for this authorization?

They've gotta say something to divert attention from the elections and Bush's numbers climbing like a monkey.

When Time is of the Essence we have to do what we have to do.

Of course the Libs are going to point to all the acts of terrorism that occurred here in the gool ol' USA since 9-11 as proof that this policy didn't work and therefore wasn't necessary.

Ooops, my bad, I forgot! We actually didn't have any acts of terrorism that occurred here in the gool ol' USA since 9-11 ...
... never mind!

You can, if you wish.

What were you saying last night??

That, in following the tradition regarding New York Times "bombshell" articles on intelligence matters, the Senate Committee on Intelligence met in closed-door session yesterday. Some FReepers jump to conclusions that the CIA is leaking everything when the leaks seem to be coming from Senators and/or their staffers to score political points. Say, to block the renewal of the Patriot Act, a pet project of Senator Rockefeller who just happens to be the ranking Democrat on said committee. And what does the WaPo say about its sources?

Congressional sources familiar with limited aspects of the program would not discuss any classified details but made it clear there were serious questions about the legality of the NSA actions. The sources, who demanded anonymity, said there were conditions under which it would be possible to gather and retain information on Americans if the surveillance were part of an investigation into foreign intelligence.

Sounds like the New York Times is up to its old tricks. Expect an editorial about how evil this all is in tomorrow or (more likely) Sunday's paper. The Democrats are nothing but predictable.

After we get them, then we can go after those who criticize the President here on Free Republic.

And the Libertarians after that.
