1.4 million Indian immigrants in US (US's Center for Immigration Figures)
Hindustan Times ^ | December 13, 2005 | S Rajagopalan

If figures released by the US's Centre for Immigration Studies can be relied upon, the last five years have seen the highest influx into the US — no matter the cataclysmic 9/11 terror strikes and the stringent curbs and border scrutiny in its wake.

A report released by the centre, which favours stiffer checks on immigration, says that 7.9 million immigrants have entered the US between 2000 and 2005, more than any other five-year period in the nation's history.

This influx is said to have taken the total number of foreign-born persons in the US to 35.2 million. The number of Indians is put at 1.41 million. The largest flow of immigrants, both legal and illegal, is from Mexico, the US's southern neighbour.

The report coincides with intense moves on Capitol Hill to take up some tough immigration proposals. A measure slated for a debate in the House of Representatives on Thursday seeks to impose stiff penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants and make illegal presence in the US a felony.

Some 11 million immigrants in the US are thought to be illegal.

The bill, sponsored by Republican James Sensenbrenner, has driven a wedge between the House Republican leadership and the US Chamber of Commerce. The country's biggest business group is lobbying hard to scuttle the bill, particularly the provisions dealing with closer scrutiny of employers.

But Steve Camarota of the Centre for Immigration Studies has sought to raise serious policy questions. "The 35.2 million immigrants living in the country in March 2005 is the highest number ever recorded. It is also two-and-a-half times of the 13.5 million immigrants during the peak of the last great immigration wave in 1910," he says.

His report claims that 19 per cent of immigrants live in poverty, 31 per cent of them have not completed high school and a third lack health insurance. "Does it make sense to bring in so many people with relatively little education? What do we do about illegals," Camarota asks.

But other advocacy groups like the National Immigration Forum argue that the foreign-born population contributes significantly by helping a number of job sectors to thrive.

I don't see what is gained by attacking people who have immigrated legally . The focus should be on Illegals. This is somewhat xenophobic . There are many patriotic legal immigrants . If you want to talk about Criminals then there is the deportation avenue.

Regardless of all the arguments -- immigration into the U.S. is out of control. Special interests are driving the government, and driving our country into the ground. I agree the largest issue is the illegals and our borders -- a total tragedy for this country -- we have been abandoned by the Washington elitists (so-called government) and America is back sliding into socialist mediocrity.

Makes me sick.

The number of Indians is put at 1.41 million.

And 60 million more on the way according to a recent poll from India. That's how many plan to pack up for the states and do all the work "no one wants to do" just as soon as we get that guest worker program passed.

The 35 million figure is the total of ALL persons in the US not born here -- that includes the 90 year olds who came as children before the first world war, the DPs from WW 2, the Hungarians and Vietnamese, as well as all of the more recent, legals and illegals.

Not really. According to NumbersUSA:

"Sen. Specter's efforts to radically increase the importation of foreign workers has been followed daily in India where one poll shows more than 60 million workers and family are hoping to get a chance to move to the U.S. in the next few years."

60 million is a grossly inflated figure (and might I add a totally unrealistic figure) most probably to whip up the anti-immigration hobby horse. 35 Million is the total number of foreigners you have inside your country of which about a little more than a million are from India. 60 Million is almost close to 60 times the current number of Indians in US. 60 Million would be twice more than the 1947 exodus of Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan to India (during Indo-Pak partition) and four times more than the number of people comming as refugees to India during creation of Bangladesh.

In other words 60 Million is a totally BS figure.

Nope, I do not believe the poll is BS, in fact I think it's an underestimation.

"in fact I think it's an underestimation."

Yeah? What's your estimate? 600 million?
How are they gonna get there? By land? Air? Water? How do you think any country can displace 60 million of its people half way across the world? How many aircrafts and planes trips would that require?

I dont suppose you realise, 60 million is a fifth of the total population of the United States.

As I said ....you must be nuts.

My my testy aren't we Gengis? You're beginning to sound like an annoying troll who doesn't like anyone that disagrees with his world view.

They're going to come in the same they are now, however that is, by plane, ship or crawling across the Mexican desert where yes thousands of Indians, Chinese, and just about every other nationality have been apprehended.

When hundreds of millions live in poverty it's quite expected they'll flood into a country that refuses to enforce its own laws. The blame here is not necessarily on them but on the government that won't stop it.

Err.....and arnt we a little too quick to call the "troll" eh? Just because I disagree with your bogus figures..... I must be a "troll" right?

"They're going to come in the same they are now, however that is, by plane, ship or crawling across the Mexican desert where yes thousands of Indians, Chinese, and just about every other nationality have been apprehended."

That way it will take 600 years for US to have 60 Million people to get there. After 60 years since India's independence there are so far only about a million Indians in the US.

"When hundreds of millions live in poverty it's quite expected they'll flood into ...."

You are obviously out of touch arnt you? With India's economy growing at 9% growth rate (3 times faster than US) the flow has already reversed. According to recent reports a lot of Indians in the US are comming back. There are a lot more and better jobs here now.

This is somewhat xenophobic.

So what if it is. In truth Xenophobia is quite common and doing quite well all over the world. Without the basic separation of people provided by Xenophobia no unique culture can develop. Without Xenophobia it would all be just one great big mass of humanity. Which it obviously isn’t.

Races and culture develop and people have an inherit desire to associate with people of the same race and culture. To claim that we are all "xenophobic" cause we don’t want to associate with other races and cultures is counter to people’s basic desires. Which is to associate with those that are quite like themselves. Christians like to hang out with Christians. Jews like to hang out with Jews. Stuff like that.

In the real world WASP's don't want to hang out with Arabs. White's and Black's don’t mix all that well. Americans and East Indians will never coexist in close quarters with conflicts. A strong border wall with a highly restrictive immigration policy is the best way to prevent conflicts.
