Considering they spoke NO English....no I never knew exactly where they were from

well then, you were mighty quick to label them Indians, weren't you? For all you know they could have been Caribbeans, South Americans, light-skinned africans, Arabs, southern Mediterraneans, Albanians, Persians, South Asians, South East Asians or someone with a tan -- seems like classifying everyone with a brown(ISH) skin as "the other"

Hispanics did not build America. The Hispanic population was infinitesimal prior to the 1950s. On the mainland USA it was 1% in 1950

They didn't ask that question for the '50 census, but in 1940 the fraction was 1.8% while in 1990 it was 9.0%. I'm sure the '90 and later if I took the time to find the results, under reports the Hispanic fraction, by not counting many of them at all. http://www.census.gov/population/documentation/twps0056/tab01.xls

I looked at your link and people of "Hispanic origin" were ~1.5% in 1940. So I'm pretty close. The percentage of Jews in 1940 was probably 2.2% and for blacks 10%
All I'm saying is Hispanics did not really help to make America, to build America, except as a footnote. I would say the same about Jews, and I'm Jewish

It's funny, and they say that American men are sexist! :) I have seen it more and more from the Latin and South Asian cultures, but I still don't know how to handle it, rather than the golden rule. That works! :D

I have also noted that Indian femals are actually more aggressive in the work place in terms of "political" issues than their mael counterpart

I have noticed that as well. Perhaps it is something between the castes? The reason that I think it is, is because I had another Indian manager, who was married to ANOTHER manager at the same company - they came over on H1Bs together - but SHE ran the show, period. She made the rules, and everything... So it could be a caste thing, too.

I think I find similar "cliques" with Chinese/Koreans too, but not to the extent with Indians.

Hehehe... they are too smart for most of us American kids. In California schools, it's so sad to see them dumbing down the education with these kids, especially the foreign-born ones, or children of, because they are *so* smart... but the education they get sours them. Me... I'm homeschooling!

BTW, do your Indian colleagues wear a lot of perfume?

That's interesting... I haven't seen that. Mostly they are just drowning the REST of the place out. :P One guy we had come to work with us at my last job, we had to pull him aside and 'teach' him about American hygeine. This was when we were three to a tiny office too!!! *ack* Needless to say, he did take it well... but as soon as we were moved to more open space, it stopped!

The areas where programmers and engineers are displaced is Silicon Valley, several areas in Texas, and 2 in the No. VA area: The Beltway and the Dulles Corridor.

These companies are trying to hold down their labor costs in order to sell products at a more competitive price. In the process, it "costs" Americans their jobs.

There are parallels between the lower end of the payscale and the upper. Wherever there are folks who will work for less and are less than completely legal, then companies will find them and exploit them.

It's just that the H1-B process is more "legal" than the illegals working for farmers, roofers, landscapers, etc. But the net effect is that they do "rob" Americans of their jobs.

BTW, I consider part of this problem to be because of Greenspan. IF he weren't such an inflation hawk, companies would be able to pay more for labor and raise their prices. BUT since they can't, they seek the lowest cost labor and any other way they can find to keep their cost of end-product as low as possible.

Therefore, if they can find a way of hiring lower-cost labor, like H1-B's who are basically indentured servants, working obscene humbers of hours a week while waiting for the "safety" of their Green card, they will, at the expense of Americans who "should" be able to get the wages that their education and experience warrants. You can read Prof. Norm Matloff's bio here: http://heather.cs.ucdavis.edu/matloff.html

And there are several hotlinks on that page to his work on H1-B Visas as well as a summary of his appearance before Congress on the subject. He also maintains an email list, keeping the members apprised of the current events on H1-B Visas, here: Norm Matloff
