An employee of Northern Arizona University was arrested and charged Thursday with being a member of an ecoterrorism group and setting fires...

Her arrest, one of six across the country and two in Arizona, marks the culmination of a nine-year investigation by the FBI and dozens of other agencies into several arsons in the Pacific Northwest, many of which were claimed to be the work of the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front.

Kendall Tankersley, 28, also known as Sarah Kendall Harvey, stood shackled and bound in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Aspey in Flagstaff as a gallery of her supporters looked on.

Harvey confirmed for Aspey that she is an employee at NAU with a bachelor's degree in molecular biology.

ELF, the organization is a global "radical" environmental movement that has a loosely knit organization that "uses direct action ...

The organization is believed to have formed in the early 1990s in England from radical members of Earth First! who refused to go mainstream and stop "monkeywrenching" activities, according to information from the FBI.

News media reports up and down the Pacific Coast states document dozens of destructive attacks claimed by ELF or ALF.

The attacks prompted congressional hearings in February 2002.

During those hearings...the chief of the counterterrorism of the FBI identified ELF and ALF as responsible for more than 600 attacks across the nation. Since 1996, more than $43 million in damages have been reported.

In his testimony, James F. Jarboe, domestic terrorism section chief for the FBI, told the subcommittee, "During the past several years, special-interest extremism, as characterized by the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front, has emerged as a serious terrorist threat."
