Here is a photo from a National Guard Soldier, who was part of Hurricane Katrina's Task Force 3, that was taken at LB Landry Middle School in the Algiers area of New Orleans. This is the 'standard' the local public schools congratulate their students for making.
This was on the bulletin board put up in the faculty office, congratulating the students (and themselves?) for keeping the literacy level below 25%. Keep up the good work, New Orleans public school system...

I know several soldiers who were part of this deployment, and all of them were absolutely blown away by this. This may have already been posted, but it really needs to be seen by more people.

The perfect reflection of EXACTLY WHAT A LIBERAL STATE GOVERNMENT always does to the quality of education. I can attest to that -- I live in California! And it is ugly.

This is a middle school. The children are between the ages of 11 and 14. It is likely they will never learn to read. How sad!

Holy cow... I did a little googling. Seems that this is a significant improvement for this school:
8th Grade
Math
9% (2004)
11% (2003)
4% (2002)
The state average for Math was 51% in 2005.
English language arts
8% (2004)
6% (2003)
7% (2002)
The state average for English language arts was 50% in 2005.

Orleans Parish school students were given a gift with Katrina. The school board "lost" either 23 million or 45 million dollars last year.

If you watched the New Orleans contingent on CSPIN yesterday you would understand why the students are so poorly educated.
