DeLay, Lampson lob charges early in campaign

HOUSTON (AP) - U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay challenged his Democratic opponent Thursday to say whether U.S. troops should leave Iraq at the same time former congressman Nick Lampson demanded that DeLay return money from people associated with a congressional bribery scheme.

The spat would be typical electioneering except that the election for Texas' 22nd Congressional District is 11 months away, and that DeLay, whose seat has been safe for more than 20 years, rarely - if ever - acknowledges his opponent. And neither of the charges was exactly accurate.

This campaign, DeLay, R-Sugar Land, is under indictment on charges of violating state election law and has relinquished his post as House majority leader. National Democrats, who normally write off the seat, this year are backing Lampson, and independent liberal groups have launched ad campaigns against DeLay.

The exchange started with a letter from DeLay campaign manager Chris Homan hand-delivered to Lampson manager Mike Malaise, demanding to know whether Lampson agreed with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., that it was time to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq.

Evidently DeLay hasn't seen all the polls that show Americans think Iraq is a quagmire. Doesn't he read the newspapers?

I live in Delay's district. And I know of several people who will vote for Lampson. He has history of being a very conservative dem. Delay will have a fight on his hands.

Lampson was my previous Congressman. If he is a conservative, I have a bridge to sell you.

I am not voting for him,but like I said I know a few who are. They are feed up with the republicans. Spending, open boarders, free traitors, that sort of thing.

The exact words I ahe heard twice is "we need a change." I did not say it was logical, but there is a lot of discontent from people I know.

He is running unopposed. As for me I will not vote for Lampson, but I most likely will not vote at all. I can't stomach voting for free traitors any longer.

That is what I think they are. And whether you or other like it or not I will not support one. I hope someone will come forth in the primary to challenge Delay who does represent my views but it does not look hopeful at this time.

I voted for Delay in 2004 but after cafta I can no long give hime my support.
