Tonight [November 29], Comedy Central will air a special by Denis Leary, Merry F#%$in Christmas (it first aired two nights ago and is scheduled to air again on Dec. 17). The show consists of several skits, a cartoon and musical performances.
There is a skit about lesbian nuns, and a song by Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering Church Choir about a hooker. But by far the most offensive part of the show is the monologue by Denis Leary on the origins of Christmas. Here is part of what he says:
Merry Christmas. Tonight we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, whose mom, Mary, just happens to be a virgineven after she apparently gave birth to Jesus. At least that is what the Catholic Church would have you believe.
Tom Cruise is taking a lot of s--- for belonging to a religion, Scientology, that believes aliens came to this planet 75 million years ago. That is nothing. I was raised Catholic. We believe Mary was a virgin and Jesus ended up walking on water, creating a bottomless jug of wine and rising from the dead. Oh, yeah, and Tom Cruise is crazy.
Listen, Christmas is built on a line of bulls---. Do I believe there was a baby Jesus? You bet your ass I do. But I believe that nine months before he was born someone sure as s--- banged the hell out of his mom.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:
I am asking Catholic League members, and friends of the Catholic League, to e-mail Doug Herzog, the president of Comedy Central, requesting that he nix the Dec. 17th showing of this vile special, and any future showings that might be planned. He can be contacted at Doug.Herzog@comedycentral.com.
Hate speech dressed in humorous garb is still hate speech. Leary is obviously bedeviled by some disorder, but nothing excuses this crap.
Why should we accept such behavior?
Yep, like watching Eddie Murphy's Raw -- I'd hear beeps in my sleep after a half hour of that sheet.
"I guess only pornographers and filthy-mouthed comedians get to decide what kind of culture we have."
Well, that would be true if that was the only thing being broadcast on TV. It is not. At the same time this program ran, there were hundreds of other programs running that did not have that point of view.
Was Mary a virgin? Not in my opinion. Was Jesus divine? Not in my opinion. I have no problem with people believing either thing, though. I'm not insisting that my point of view be presented on TV, nor asking that religious programming be banned.
Personally, I think the program is in bad taste, and wouldn't watch it. But, that's my choice, isn't it? I also don't watch the many religious channels on my television set. I'm not asking that they be removed, though.
I USE my channel selector.
Why does anyone think this guy is funny? I have never heard a funny word come out of his mouth.
I noticed that the Stooges are still a perennial favorite.
Indeed he does.
"Why should we accept such behavior?"
Well then Leary must be a typical narcissistic libertarian who bashes everything.
I watched the first couple minutes of the show last night,
then I flipped to another channel because the a-hole wasn't funny.
Leary is actually a very good guy. I don't know why he's chosen to bash Catholicism, but I will hope that he finds his way back to the Church. What a shame.
I must've missed it. Which book was that?
"Have you - or ANYONE - ever seen or heard a comedian that bashes liberal values - EVER?
Yeah, I have...and his name is Denis Leary. He bashes smoking bans, enviornmentalists, vegetarians, therapy, Hollywood celebrities who whine about their problems and blame everybody but themselves, musicians who tell people to support liberal causes, etc."
I have nothing against Leary or Comedy Central. Leary works hard and tries new material. This is just not funny to me. And Comedy Central is just trying to make ratings so they can sell advertising. I am not so sure this is not just bad humor. I do not see a political attack on our culture as much as I see bad judgement. I do not like it. It offends me. There is nothing illegal or wrong with offending me as this is a free country.
I will, in this free country, write a letter and refuse to patronize the station. It is my choice and I will not lose sleep over it or firebomb the network, or threaten peoples lives. See I am a compassionate, logical, mainstream, hardworking, conservative. If I were a liberal wacko that had been offended, I might throw myself in front of a trian or set myself on fire in front of CNN headquarters.
I will just do my small part to advance a righteous culture rooted in morals and values for our country and hope that it is contagious.
"Moslems just doesn't believe he is God or the son of God."
They also believe that Judas was crucified in His place, I believe.
BTTT
I don't know If I would characterize Rush as a comedian, but he does one hell of a job at using humor to bash liberals...
{"Moslems just doesn't believe he is God or the son of God."

I believe that they do not know what they believe. Does their religion tell them to murder innocent people or doesn't it. You would think a religion could agree on the basics. Maybe a world renound cleric will rise up and explain it to us neophites.
This was 1, there was another: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1528979/posts
Lutherans have vacillated a good bit on the "ever-virgin" issue, and there is actually a lot of back-and-forth on the issue. A pretty good summary is here:

Someone should remind Dennis that Muslims believe in the Virgin Birth as an article of their faith. That will shut him up but good.
