"Not so fast: according to this article, for example, no European nation does."

Are you lazy or what man? Google it.

Fair enough, but the key distinction you made is legal residency. How many of these countries would grant citizenship to children of illegals?

That was what I got from 2 seconds on google, it is not comprehensive. If you wish to find out the immigration policies of Uganda be my guest.

"you could ban immigration from muslims countries, with the exception of those persecuted because they're not muslim"

Except that those wanting to enter the US would simply travel to another country first. How do we stop Muslims from France, Brittain, or even Canada from entering the US? The only dent you'd make in Muslim immigration will be in the non-wackos who simply want a better life for their families. The terrorist wackos will waltz around such a simplistic restriction like it's nothing. Check all immigrants carefully against all known watch lists and keep an eye on anyone who appears suspicious.

"you could deny entry to those named "Mohamed,""

See above and see the original post. If you block everyone named Mohammed, how many terrorists do you think will call themselves Mohammed when they attempt to gain access to the US?

They need to just make it so that if the parents are illegally here, then the baby is not a citizen.

I don't have a problem with babies of legal aliens being a citizen.

I think most of Bush's proposal, even the temporary work visas might be able to work.

It's a sham. He wants blanket amnesty, and to call it anything else is a lie. He's selling us out to the big corporations, and that's ripping us off. Those corporations and their workers should be paying taxes and keeping that money in America!!! He signed an agreement with Fox and Martin on the "Americas." He wants to erase borders so we can be like Europe.

>>>>I am a conservative and watch who you are calling sonny a**wipe. Me, hang out at DU? I am not the one who is complaining that he should have voted for Kerry. You are the DUer, moaning about how you are just sick for voting for Bush. I voted for him, I voted for the most conservative candidate, Bush was it. Now, if you are through beating your breast like a little girl and being "sick" for having voted for Bush, run back to your friends on DU and try to stay there this time. Oh, yeah, grow up a little will you?<<<<

That is quite a rant, sonny. But now it is time for you to face some facts. Under this so-called "compassionate conservative" the size of government has grown dramatically; our posterity is stuck with a new, massive entitlement; there is this thing called CFR that could have been easily blocked; Islam has magically became a "religion of peace"; our border security has become far too weak to be considered a mere joke; and private citizens who offer to help the border patrol are labeled "Vigilantes". I am certain I have left a few out....

Anyway, I believe we would have been better off with a GOP congress fighting against a left-wing nut. Stalemate is not so bad, all things considered.

It appears that the fines can be negotiated now. That stacks the economic gamble in favor of the big employer.

HUGE Fines and a shutdown of business would be appropriate punishment.

I agree with everything you say because it is clearly the truth.

And the proverbial $6.00 head of lettuce is legal speak for innocent until proven guilty, regardless of the circumstance. Defense lawyers are making a killing defending these illegal immigrants so is the lettuce really as cheap as it appears?

One face at the border only increases the chances of corruption because it removes the checks and balances of having more people checking entry.

The government is saying the illegals are doing the jobs Americans won't do. Well I am in the construction business and I see the illegals doing a LOT of construction work that is puttiing American citizens out of work.

Their work is not only cheap and shoddy, but they work dusk till dawn ignoring work safety practices without overtime pay. They are obviously making the general contractor a lot of money for them to overlook the shoddy workmanship. And whoever takes possession of the building upon completion inherits a LOT of problems because of the poor quality.

All forms of construction are affected, non union and union alike. I am sure there are other cases where illegal immigrants are taking work from Americans.

Service jobs.....Hotels. When was the last time the cleaning maid at a hotel you stayed an english speaking employee? I travel a lot and stay at some decent hotels.
I see it every day.

The jobs Americans won't do are most certainly the ones taken by illegal immigrants. There is truth to that statement! However it is misleading in the context our government explains.

When jobs are performed by illegals, legal workers are not hired. Who can take a job already filled? That becomes a job an American won't do.

Our government is so full of double speak, not only on immigration. but every issue of national concern.

I'm still trying to figure out where all these supposed savings are for using illegal workers. Don't see prices for food, clothing or housing coming down even though I'm sure a fair amount of the labor component for most goods and services are performed by low wage workers. Obviously, many business-types have figured out that the savings they see from getting rid of Americans now goes into their pocket as well as the fact that some of the living expenses for their workers is paid for by taxpayers......whattadeal! On top of that they get to evade a lot of payroll taxes they used to pay........gee I wonder who has to make up the difference? How stupid do they think we are!

An illegal worker more than likely will not be reported as payroll and covered by workers comp insurance. That is one way of saving employers a LOT of money.

Sure, add to that the employers contribution to their workers FICA as well as state and fed'l unemployment taxes.......that burden all gets shifted over to the dummies still trying to keep Americans working as well as paying the standard business taxes.

Read my whole post. Plus his plan isnt blanket amnesty, its not removing all penalties for their actions, its intended to get the people to take themselves out of the country. Plus the program with increase border enforcement-if he goes through with it, should not encourage more illegal immigration, he should make it clear its a one time thing thats intended to end this problem for good. Now I agree it wont work, especially since most of them will just have children and stay permenantly. He could make it simplier as I would suggest and just round them up and send them away. However, its not big corporations making money off of the Illegal labor, its usually smaller buisnesses, making tool parts, doing farm work or construction. A lot of it is under the table in the first place. Corporations cant get away with these kind of things, they are too public. As for creating a "Greater North America", maybe Fox and Martin are working on it, but just a reality check for you, GWB isnt selling our soveriegnty to Mexico or Canada. Lose the talking points.
