It is a sad day indeed but the good news is honesty still counts, even if comes late.

Does honesty still count if it's only employed to secure a lighter sentence?

No. If one only owns up after the truth is known and only then to garner a lighter sentence, one can hardly be considered honorable.

Since "all have sinned" however, we can admit to living in glass houses but we do recognize dishonesty when we see it and demand our elected officials not roll over for bribes, no matter the reason.
