Bush at the Tipping Point
msnbc.msn.com - Newsweek ^ | Nov. 28, 2005 issue | Howard Fineman

Posted on 11/21/2005 1:20:05 PM PST by Mo1

A hawkish Democrat calls for an Iraq withdrawal, setting off a bitter fight in Washington over how, and when, the troops should come home.

As friends describe it, Rep. Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania had been searching his soul for months, seeking guidance on what to do in Congress about Iraq. "I think he was going through what we Catholics call a 'long night of the soul'," said Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut.

(snip)

Which was precisely what the Democratic leadership wanted Murtha to do. A close ally, Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, was anxious to open a second axis of attack on Iraq—and was aware of his growing antagonism toward the war. The two met and agreed that he would make his case in private to the party conference. After that, on his own, he would introduce a resolution calling for withdrawal of troops from Iraq "at the earliest practicable date." Pelosi and the other liberals would keep their distance, while their own Marine charged up the Hill. Framed by long rows of American flags at a press conference, he denounced the Iraq war as a "flawed policy wrapped in an illusion."

This from a woman who reveres abortion as a sacrament? God help the Catholic Church rid itself of these loons.

"I think he was going through what we Catholics call a 'long night of the soul',"

Actually, it's the "Dark night of the soul", and it has little to do with politics. It's more about feeling like God is no longer with you.

A distant cousin to the feeling would be what a soldier feels when he thinks that no one back home supports him.

Pure B*ll S**t. This guy called for withdrawal last year and also called for withdrawal from Somalia when that was going on.

To say that he was soul searching is crap. This guy is a Defeatist from way back. All the good he might have ever done in the Marines is washed away now. He is just another Cindy Sheehan these days.

Right Howie. That why your Surrender Now hero's lost 430-3 on their Cut and Run from Iraq agenda. Just ignore Murtha's 18 months of rabid Surrender Monkey-ism. Just ignore all Murtha's statements since May 2004 against the war. That doesn't fit "Flush the Koran" Newsweek's Editors Hate American First agenda. Just go out and knowing LIE about Murtha to the American people Howie Just flush your credibility down the crapper with Newsweak's. Considering how regularly the Dinosaur Media lies, one has to wonder that ANYONE takes them seriously any more.

To Rosa DeLauro:

(1) You are not a Catholic, you abortion-loving heathen.

(2) Catholics do use the phrase from St. John of the Cross' writings "dark night of the soul" - not "long night of the soul."

(3) The phrase "dark night of the soul" has nothing to with deciding to stab your country's troops in the back, but dealing with the reality that God has abandoned the soul to spiritual pain and the temptation of despair in order to purify it from its imperfections.

To John P. Murtha:

You are a corrupt and traitorous sissy.

Murtha is a "hawkish Democrat" the same way Bill Clinton is a "morally pure Democrat".

I'm reminded of the Abe Lincoln story about calling a dog's tail "a leg". And how many "legs" does the dog have? Why, four -- calling the tail a leg doesn't make it a leg.

I think that was 403-3, not 430-3 (almost 30 didn't vote either way).

How soon will Congressman Murtha fly to Paris to receive the Marshall Petain Award?

Incredible as it may seem, Howard the Duck tries to spin a 401 -3 stinging defeat as evil Republicans defaming the galmorous and hawkish John Murtha who simply had a vision on his 3 day tour of Iraq telling him "We must bring them home now!"

The same John Murtha who took the same "bring them home now: position a couple of years ago vis a vis Iraq and almost a decade ago in Somalia. Now what happened when we showed our backs in Somalia? Oh yeah, Kobar, the USS Cole , the African Embassies and of course the WTC.

I salute Murthas service in the corps and I hold in absolute disdain his opinions on foreign policy. He is a danger to this nation just as Howard Fineman is a danger to journalism.

This take on what happened is far more disgusting than what really happened. It transparently reveals Fineman as a cheerleader for the democrats. We know instinctively that they all are, but he could have at least attempted to write in a balanced manner.

technically it wasnt a withdrawal, Murtha's plan called for no NEW deployments and those there now stay until no longer needed. It's still stupid. However the republicans changed the language in the bill to basically cut and run, thinking once it got to the floor the dems would think it was the bill Murtha had and in effect they would vote for cut and run. However the some progressives found out about the plan and had to hastily call the democrats to not vote on it. That's why there are only 3 yays. this site has an article on it and it may just be their spin(most likely) http://www.pdamerica.org/ you may need to wash after reading

LOL, I thought the same thing, "long night of the soul," where did she get that.

Speaking of "Dark Night of the Soul," the book by St. John of the Cross is a great read.
