China, and not India, will be a superpower in 10 years. That is the view of an overwhelming majority of American adults, according to a Harris Interactive poll released on Tuesday.
But then, more Americans feel it will be in the US's best interest to encourage India's growth and prosperity instead of China's. What they dread is China's military might, rather than its economic clout, once it is anointed as the superpower.
As many as 70 per cent of those surveyed felt China will emerge as a superpower by 2015. Only 20 per cent believe India will attain that status by then. In the survey, 41 per cent opted for Japan, 31 per cent for European Union, 25 per cent for UK and 15 per cent for Russia.
Quite a few (29 per cent) think that China is already an economic superpower. This compares with 67 per cent who say the US is the only one in the big league. Only 2 per cent regard India as a superpower.
The poll conducted across the US in mid-October covered 1,833 adults.
On the question of US encouraging other economies to grow, 39 per cent rooted for India as opposed to 24 per cent for China. But much higher numbers favoured the other four players (UK 69 per cent, EU 55, Japan 47 and Russia 45).
"Concerns about China gaining strength seem to be more focused on its potential military rather than economic gains, though concerns about China's economic growth are not insignificant," the authors said.
"What they dread is China's military might, rather than its economic clout, once it is anointed as the superpower."
People talk about the world changing on 9/11, and in a way it did.
However, that miserable, mangy dog Clinton sold the Chinese all the hardware and software they need to develop first-strike nuclear ICBM capability.
On the morning that the Chinese announce, "We have 500 precisely targeted nuclear warheads aimed at you, capable of taking out not only your nuclear response capability but all your major cities," the world will suddenly be a dramatically different place, and in a horrible way.
Confucius say, "Country that decommission all guided missle submarines have head waaaaaaaay up tuchis."
I don't fear China.
I just want them all eating Big Macs and smoking Marlboro's.
No, we fear that our limp wristed politicians will continue to kick the can down the road, that's what we fear.
hate to say it, but we are more likely to ally with China and take on most of the world than to face China in a war.
I've been saying for a few years that only one nation can realistically pose a threat to America in my lifetime and that's China. I don't know what we can do, but I fear an impending crisis.
LOL...that was great.
China and Russia are so busy handling money they are more concerned with getting Corpal Tunnel and aggravating their arthritis.
The U.S. has spent heavily to bring the world forward and past a world recession.
Yes its a debt....but History will laud the U.S. for doing so.
Russia and China both have a history of self detonating from within.
If that trend can be stemmed....this planet will surely march on to better things.
Space is likely to be the next insecurity point with these 2.
U.S. will have to find a way to include them....allong with Japan.
question remains.....will the French be satisified with being galley chefs in the future on starships : )
Some yahoo in India spouts nonsense on the basis of polls of Americans and it gets treated as news.
Polls invariably show nothing much other than how uninformed those polled are. Or how ignorant or confused they tend to be on any issue one can think of.
What is one to really make of job approval polls of uninformed knuckle dragging, mouth breathing mental patients? On top of that, neo-journalists treat these statistics as if they are legitimate measures of government officials performance and they quite simply are not.
People who advance such stories are part of a growing problem of promoting confusion and contributing to world wide chaos.
BOMB PEKING
Was I ahead of my time?
I have no doubt that Putin is rankled every time "Super Power" is mentioned without including him and his mother Russia. He has evil plans he is not sharing. I would bet my life on it.
We have it so backwards here in the USA. The only things we should be importing from China, IMO, are made by Norinco.
I'm sorry, but I strongly disagree with Lee and Melanie on that. They completely misunderstand the mindset and motive of the Chinese government.
Weren't the critics of Ronald Reagan in the 80's suggesting more or less the same approach. I'm glad that Reagan didn't listen.
Fortunately polls aren't always very accurate. At least both of my next door neighbors believe that Hillary will be a great president, and I live in Texas.
I was in a McDonalds in Beograd in 1986. Did they have to close it before Clinton could start bombing the town 12 years later? Or does the rule not hold true if the other side doesn't fight back?
On the question of US encouraging other economies to grow, 39 per cent rooted for India as opposed to 24 per cent for China. Clearly, 24 percent want to continue the mistaken policies that favor the current vectors of change. These are undoubtedly knuckle-dragging liberals, but there they are.
