About that longer border fence
San Diego Union ^ | Nov. 13, 2005 | CHUCK DeMUND

Posted on 11/13/2005 6:23:38 AM PST by radar101

After hearing Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, briefly describe the much needed-border control legislation that he and a colleague have introduced, I went online and read a summary of the bill.

A secure sea-to-sea border fence system is long overdue, of course. But the bill goes much further than a fence. Here are examples of what this bill would do:

Empower states and local authorities to enforce immigration laws. Require Department of Homeland Security to fully implement a computerized entry-exit system. Authorize thousands of new Border Patrol officers, immigration investigators, attorneys, immigration judges and work-site investigators.

Increase penalties and prevent employers from hiring illegal aliens through an improved Social Security identification card and verification system and require employers to use it. Prevent illegal aliens from claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and collecting Social Security. Increase penalties for forging immigration and identity documents, for falsely claiming U.S. citizenship and for alien smuggling.

I suggest that the other strong provisions it contains, in combination with the physical border barrier, would put an end to America's biggest economic and security problem.

Sounds like a plan.

Ok, so when is it going to be up and running?

The exit/entry system was announced and funded several years ago, but is still only partially implemented. Why?

The 300,000 "absconders" who have lost all deportation appeals were supposed to have been added to the national NCIC database a long time ago, IIRC Ashcroft announced the program in Nov. 2001. It's purpose was to allow local LEOs to apprehend them. That seems to have stalled as well.

it should include welfare, schooling, medicaid, food stamps, drivers licensing and all other ID that might suggest "legal" presence in the US. This legislation should make hopping the border as unattrctive as possible to would-be illegal alien trespasser/freeloaders.

Just common sense, IF you really want to secure the borders.

"A secure sea-to-sea border fence system is long overdue..."

IMHO, this could be a very effective Presidential Campaign issue in 2008, but who would use it, Republicans or Democrats?

Our country desperately needs a front door that can be used to control who may enter and who may not. As it is now, we not only don't have a door, there are no windows, and there are certainly no walls. Anyone who wants to can enter our country through either of our borders, both North and South.

If a Democrat promises to correct the situation, you can bet it will be an empty promise only made to attract votes, but the Republicans won't touch the issue because they fear they will lose the Hispanic vote.

I don't have much confidence that either political party will correct this problem before a nuke goes off in one of our major cities.

This is what we have for a few miles in San Diego: rusty old runway mats. The corrogations are even horizontal, to make it easier to climb. Because it is opaque, it helps smugglers and coyotes, by shielding their movements along the Mexican side until the Border Patrol is out of sight and they are ready to jump.

What we need is a modern multiple fence system, with sensors and a plowed tracking strip. Then the Border Patrol will have a line to defend, instead of needing to roam across 100,000 square miles of open border land, looking for illegal crossers.

Ok, so when is it going to be up and running?

Just as soon as the legislation is passed and signed into law, of course.

Empower states and local authorities to enforce immigration laws.

Already exists.

Require Department of Homeland Security to fully implement a computerized entry-exit system.

Show me the money!

Authorize thousands of new Border Patrol officers, immigration investigators, attorneys, immigration judges and work-site investigators.

Again, this would have to be funded.

Increase penalties...

Since current laws are not enforced why would new laws be followed or enforced?

... and prevent employers from hiring illegal aliens through an improved Social Security identification card and verification system and require employers to use it.

Employers of illegal aliens would once again pay off some politicians and mandatory employee verification would die on the vine.

Prevent illegal aliens from claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and collecting Social Security.

How? If they're filing tax returns you have obviously not been able to prevent them from being here, working here and from using a phony S.S.#.

Increase penalties for forging immigration and identity documents, for falsely claiming U.S. citizenship and for alien smuggling.

Riiiiiiiiiiight, that oughta do it!

There is also a provision that allows Joe Citizen to sue for use of illegal immigrant labor. No more depending on the government. So a group like FAIR (which already has immigration lawyers on staff) or the Minutemen could organize a national program to investigate and target employers. The damages could be used to continue the process ad infinitum.

This the BEST part of the whole bill, right after the part getting rid of anchor babies.

It would cost practically nothing when put up against a budget of $2,000,000,000,000+.

INDIA is accelerating the construction of a 2,500-mile fence to seal its border with Bangladesh amid growing fears that its Muslim neighbour could become “a new Afghanistan”.

ISRAEL: RUSSIA MAY 'IMPORT' SECURITY FENCE TO CHECHEN BORDER

Jerusalem, 8 Nov. (AKI) - The Russian government is considering building a security barrier along its border with the restive Muslim-majority republic of Chechnya similar to Israel's West Bank security fence, the Jerusalem Post reported on Tuesday. The claim follows a meeting on Monday between Russia's head of counter-terrorism in Chechnya and the Kremlin's envoy to southern Russia, Dmitry Kozak, Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, and internal security minister Gideon Ezra, to discuss the effectiveness of the security fence in fighting terrorism.

And what makes you think that the democrats and the open borders Republicans will ever allow this to pass? It sounds to me like good legislation that would have a significant impact on the border control problem....which is exactly why it will be dead in the water. There are too many lawmakers and special interests who don't want effective border control. They stand too much to lose because illegals are their bread and butter or their political clout.

Like we used to say back home, "good fences make good neighbors."

Now if we could add some common sense trade legislation to the mix, so our workers don't have to directly compete with countries that are basically slave labor camps, we may have a shot at saving the country.

"I'm against the government spending billions on this fence. I'm for armed civilians on the border having a "prairie dog shoot".

The cost of such a fence would be a drop in the bucket compared to the burden they place on taxpayers, just in health care or education alone. Our infrastructure cannot withstand the unchecked hemorrhaging at the border indefinitely and any cost of fixing it pales in comparison to the cost of allowing it to continue.
