The Anti-ANWR Exploration Republicans: Who Is Vulnerable in 12 Months?

Michelle Malkin did some digging to come up with a list of GOP House members who are reportedly pro-Saudi/Chavez oil dependence and thus anti-ANWR exploration. This list hasn't been verified, but it is a good place to start digging, and the eventual vote on ANWR exploration will depend on this group.

Note that most of these Members come from overwhelmingly Republican districts, and won in 2004 with huge margins, making them indifferent to what their Republican base actually thinks.

But some of them are vulnerable, including especially Gerlach, Reichert, Shays, and Simmons. Those four will no doubt be targeted by serious conservatives and national security-minded Democrats a year from now. The GOP can afford to lose four or five seats to make an enduring point that there are some votes on which national security trumps personal preference. ANWR exploration is one of them.

Take a moment this weekend to contact these four as a way of starting to convey to the GOP caucus that it is expected to govern as a majority party, and to put the interests of the country and the party ahead of their own posturing on caribou.

For reference, here is the "margin of victory" numbers for the anti_ANWR exploration Republicans:

Member, State, District, Margin of Victory in 2004

Charles Bass, New Hampshire, 2nd; 20%

Sherwood Boehlert, New York; 24th; 23%

Jeb Bradley, New Hampshire; 1rst; 26%

Mike Castle, Delaware; 1rst; 39%

Vernon Ehlers, Michigan; 3rd; 36%

Mike Ferguson, New Jersey; 7th; 16%

Mike Fitzpatrick, Pennsylvania; 8th; 13%

Rod Frelinghuysen, New Jersey;11th; 37%

Jim Gerlach, Pennsylvania; 6th; 2%

Wayne Gilcrest, Maryland; 1rst; 52%

Bob Inglis, South Carolina; 4rth; 49%

Nancy Johnson, Connecticut; 5th; 22%

Sue Kelly, New York; 19th; 34%

Mark Kennedy, Minnesota; 6th; 8%

Mark Kirk, Illinois; 10th; 28%

Jim Leach, Iowa; 2nd; 20%

Frank LoBiondo, New Jersey; 2nd; 32%

Jim Ramstad, Minnesota; 30%

Dave Reichert, Washington; 8th; 4%

Jim Saxton, New Jersey; 3rd; 28%

James Sensenbrenner, Wisconsin; 5th; 34%

Christopher Shays, Connecticut; 4rth; 4%

Robert Simmons, Connecticut; 2nd; 8%

James Walsh, New York; 25th; 80% (really)

Target 5 of the RINOs and thay will serve to concentrate the minds of the rest beautifully. If they desert their party, they ought to pay the political price. Its about time.

Why would solid Republicans be against ANWR? I don't get it. I did here Rush say yesterday that this so called "Main Street" group is being funded by George Soros. Talk about disloyal activity.

It would be nice to see them lose in a primary rather than a general.

I see mine is right at the top of the list. It must be alphabetical because that's the only way he'd be first in anything. What a peckerhead he is. Worse than useless.

My thoughts exactly. And I couldn't stand that pencil neck geek. It's a sorry state the Republican party is in here in NH.

Reichert (WA-4%) is the guy whoe replaced Jennifer Dunn. He represents Bellevue, the eastern, wealthy, and relatively conservative Seattle suburb. Unfortunately, this area is so kneejerk eco-wacko that they'd line up to sacrifice their own children if it meant saving the life of an unhatched salmon. He feels pressure to cave into the people-hating environuts.

FWIW, he voted against the Terri Schiavo bill.

He is otherwise pro-life and relatively conservative. He was the sherriff who caught the Green River Killer.

I don't know about the rest of them, but from what I saw on the tube last year, McCain got a bit teary eyed over the receding antarctic ice shelf. That we "have to do something" about it.

What McCain wants, he gets, apparently.

It would be nice to see them lose in a primary rather than a general.

It may be too late in some states to recruit a primary opponent, but in states that have later filing dates and later primaries, even a token opponent would rattle a few cages.

Anyone with $500.00 can get yard signs printed up with the message,

"Sick of high gas prices and no solutions?
Vote ______
REPUBLICAN
in the upcoming primary."

Replace them by voting for whatever Democrat is running against them.

Better to suffer a further two years of degradation with that that have these RINO's in office playing switch.

All ready called Ramstead and Kennedy and told them I will no longer donate my time nor my money to their efforts. Had them drop my name from their donors lists as well If one of the Conservative Mn Repbs puts forward their name for Senate in 2006, and fore Ramstead's Congressional seat, they will get my money and time instead.

Much better yet, get a Conservative Republican to run against them. Might not pick them off this year but they can be got if time and effort is put into it. In 2002 and 2004 we picked off a number of old RINOS at the state level who thought they would be in office forever because they came from a "Safe" Republican State Senate district. Better to replace a Republican with a Republican then cut off your nose to spite your face by electing a Democrat.

Club for Growth is doing some targeting for 06. This group is very effective, having supported Coburn and I believe Pence as well. If the GOP wants the money, they better start listening to their conservative base. No more money for RINOs.

These aren't solid republicans. 85 percent of the house republicans are pro drilling in anwr. The rinos are killing us. They are making us look weak. The rinos hate conservatives. They would support a dem over a conservative any day.

Main Street group works to defeat bush's judges too. They had donors go after Owens and Brown. They are a disgrace that is doing the dems dirty work. They need to be kicked out of the party. They are as bad as the backstabbing Log Cabin Republicans, Pro choice republican women groups that backstab us all the time. Ann Stone head of pro choice for women group was quoted as saying she would like to see Kerry win.

Remember Chafee last year on election day backstabbing Bush. Chafee and other main street republican senators have said they would fillabuster a real conservative judge. Kick them out of the party already. They block tax cuts and energy legislation in the committees.

Reichert sucks.

Reichert ran on saying he would drill in anwr. Then some enviornmental sierra club people came down to washington and reichert said I need to do what the people want.

Reichert doesn't know the difference between the people and special interests. Those green nuts aren't going to vote for him anyway. I hope conservative voters in his district stay home in mass. No phone banking, no knocking on doors, no money, nothing. I'd campaign and donate to the dem if I was in his district. He is a lying backstabbing rino. Rinos are always worried about the moderate voters but they don't understand the base are the people that do the work for them. Let them realize how much they will miss us.

Those rinos are so greedy too. They all told frist we will vote for the budget if you have a vote on stem cells. Then they backtracked on that. Then they said we will vote for the budget if you take out anwr. Now they want more and want the budget cuts taken away. Rinos need to be put in their place.

Blunt is killing us too. He gave the northeastern rinos 1 billion for home heating this winter. Why in the world wasn't that put in the budget to use as leverage. Let them vote against the budget and have to explain them having their constituents freeze in the winter because of some land in alaska.

" ... Better to replace a Republican with a Republican then cut off your nose to spite your face by electing a Democrat."

That is where we disagree.

Were the RINO's dumped out of office, (even 4, or 5 of them ) because the Republican voter voted Democrat, the next election there would be a "Conservative" running to replace that Rat.

The way you prefer, would simply be business as usual, with the RINO's still in place resulting in a neutered majority.
