Another seven New Orleans police officers fired for being AWOL

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Police Department fired another seven of the officers who were missing when Hurricane Katrina smashed into New Orleans, bringing to 58 the number who lost their jobs for being AWOL.

Two other officers were suspended, meaning they can return to the force once their suspension ends, spokesman Marlon Defillo said on Thursday. He did not say how long the suspension lasts.

The action came as hearings for the 240 officers that were unaccounted for during the storm continued. Hearings for the officers began Nov. 8. They will take four to six months to complete, acting superintendent Warren Riley said.

Although Riley said he intended to take action weekly on officers found to be AWOL during and after Katrina, Defillo said Friday he would not issue weekly updates.

"I'm not going to get into this until they're all done," Defillo said.

The 240 officers on the 1,450-member force were missing following Katrina, but not all are believed to have deserted. Some were stranded by high water, others were unable to communicate with their precincts because the communication system was knocked out.

If they hold down the "SHIFT" button, they can delete a whole bunch of officers at one time.

If you fire a cop in New Orleans, and he's not there, did he ever exist at all?.......What's the sound of one hand slapping?.......

Riley said he intended to take action weekly on officers found to be AWOL ...

Is there any logic in this? The Hurricane struck on August 29th ... nearly 3 months ago. How many weeks will it take them to determine which of their officers were AWOL? Why not fire them all at once ... like 2 months ago?

What's going on here? Are they going to fire them just as soon as they invent them?

Even their incompetence begins to reek of fraud ...

What's going on here is that some genius in the City human resources department forgot to keep a record on which officers were real and which were nonexistent officers put on the payroll to get federal money.

That being the case, they're having to investigate each employee to see if s/he exists . . . oh what a tangled web we weave, etc. etc.

Only 58 out of 240? They have a long way do go.

Did the cops ever return the cars they stole from the dealership?
