Iraqi's Thank America (Wow, this is moving!)
The Other Iraq ^ | 11/08/2005 | Iraqi Kurds

Posted on 11/08/2005 4:38:47 PM PST by Impeach98

"THANK YOU AMERICA"
I have the very good fortune to be working for a PR company hired by the Iraqi Kurds to help promote a media campaign that begins on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 here in the United States.

Tomorrow is the launch of a TV ad campaign where the Iraqi Kurds say "Thank You" to America for liberating them from the oppressive regime of Saddam Hussein. Please watch the ads and post your thoughts.

"Thank You America" is the first of 3 ads that will run in the United States (beginning on Fox News Channel) and then thanking British and American troops in Europe and the Middle East.

These are wonderful ads - I really liked the one with the guy with the purple finger. But I do have a question: Why is Kurdistan "the other Iraq"? Does this mean we liberated them as well as Iraq? Probably this is explained on the site; I'll go there and review it again. Thanks.

Okay; I think I answered my own question. Kurdistan is a region in Iraq, so these are Iraqis too (?), but still not clear as to why it's the "other" Iraq. Hmmmm. I really liked the ads, though.

"The Other Iraq" is their marketing theme - it's the Iraq you don't hear about. The reason they chose that slogan is to break through the media's horrible reporting on Iraq as a war-torn country spiraling into despair.

The Kurds resent that. There are many different regions in Iraq that are peaceful and moving forward (including Southern Iraq). And the violence you hear about is limited to pockets in the country.

Thus, they want people to know there's an Iraq you don't hear about from CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, etc...

Nice ads, but are they a prelude to separation? The other Iraq? Fall in love with a warm message then we're hook to feel for them when they separate. I hope not but makes me wonder.

Yeah, it should be an interesting week for us here in the office as this campaign gets going (there's also a giant ad in the Washington edition of the Wall Street Journal tomorrow with the header "Thank You America."

Why do I get this message after Media Player tries to connect?

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the server is not responding. If you entered a URL or path to play the file, verify that it is correct. If you clicked a link to play the file, the link may not be valid.

I think they are the "other" Iraq that is fairly quiet and normal. The lamestream media is only interested in Kurdistan when a car bomb goes off in Kirkuk or Mosul.

Nope nope - I just posted the explanation to hslaw about what "The Other Iraq" means. The Kurds view themselves as the model for the nation. They think that the system of democracy, free markets, etc... that they have built and are building can be a pathway for the entire nation. Remember the Iraqi PM (Talabani) is a Kurd!

CNN has rejected the ads for now. Can you believe it? The Kurds here in the U.S. are actually putting together funding to do additional waves of advertising here in the U.S. But for the general public they just ask that people hear their words of thanks and learn more about what they've been doing in the largely peaceful enclave of Iraqi Kurdistan.

That's an excellent theme - and I heartily agree that there's an Iraq we hear nothing about. But as an honest reaction, I was a little confused by the references to Kurdistan and "the Other Iraq" at first, thinking maybe it was a different country. And I do try to stay somewhat in touch with activities in Iraq (which is why I'm a FReeper), so if I was confused, I'd have to say a lot of people who don't know anything will be, too. It's a great idea, though, to present another view of Iraq, and I totally approve. The "thank you" ad really touches the heartstrings. Excellent work by all involved.

Sadly ... Yes I can

It's nice to hear a Thank You ... and many will hear their words .. regardless of CNN

Trust me, they have wanted to be up with these for months, but it takes a lot of work to get everyone on the same page - realize they have an enormous amount to overcome in Iraq and it is amazing they were able to get this far in the program. There are so many people who want to see failure for Iraq, and the Iraqi Kurds had actually hoped to get this ad campaign up a month ago (before the Iraqi elections) as it is, this was the last chance this year - to get them on before the December constitutional elections in Iraq.
