State of Emergency Declared in France

President Jacques Chirac declared a state of emergency Tuesday, paving the way for curfews to be imposed on riot-hit cities and towns in an extraordinary measure to halt France's worst civil unrest in decades after 12 nights of violence.

Police, meanwhile, said overnight unrest Monday-Tuesday, while still widespread and destructive, was not as violent as previous nights.

"The intensity of this violence is on the way down," National Police Chief Michel Gaudin said, citing fewer attacks on public buildings and fewer direct clashes between youths and police. He said rioting was reported in 226 towns across France, compared to nearly 300 the night before.

When they burned vehicles within sight of the Paris elite, it's now a state of emergency.

Parisians getting their just deserts for generations of elitism and socialism (I know - a contradiction in terms to everyone but Parisians).

But, the good news is that a lot of those burned car owners had insured with "Geico".

Has anyone noticed the rioters aren't reported as looting?

They can't feel too deprived.

The French are so strange.

Now that the rioting is way down, from 300 locations to 226 or so, NOW they declare a state of emergency so they can impose curfews.

Riiiiight.

Seems like everyone just wants to slap down the French on this issue - which is of course easy and fun to do.

The problem however is so deep for them - it has to be appreciated just a little.

The question is - do you let this fire burn itself out and contain it - or - do you attack it, and run the risk of making it flame up even more.

The French have a tough problem here - they are calculating that containment is the course of choice.

Remember - in France - the suburbs are for the poor - the cities are for the wealthy.

We all have to watch this - and hope (despite every emotion) that they can get this under control.

Ugly situation.

"The intensity of this violence is on the way down,"

This is a wonderful strategy the French are following. They've decided to do nothing, and let the riots burn themselves out (pun unintentional). I guess they are following their WWII strategy. "If we just do nothing, maybe they'll all go away". Of course in worked in WWII. I'm just not sure the rest of the world is going to be as willing this time to do their dirty work.

Not too late for a symbolic gesture that will allow them to take credit for putting out the fire (after all the fuel has been burned).

This is what limp-wristed socialism does to a country -- and it is exactly what the U.S. will end up with, if it puts a Marxist in the White House, and Washington is allowed to stay on its LIBERAL path.

'Algerian Wars', does that avoid a current pejorative? did they wait too long to resolve this conflict, to reach a 'final solution'?
