I remember a thread from a year or so ago where someone posted a picture of an attractive 40-something woman at a media event. There were lots of drooling responses until it was pointed out that the woman in question was Sheryl Crow, at which point the venom really began to flow.

Upon a cursory first glance, I would agree with your observation, as Ms. Dowd cuts a striking figure. However, a few seconds of closer inspection reveals on that woman's face what you would otherwise know only from her prose: she is as cold as liquid nitrogen, and disconsolate by any means known to man. Her laughter is mockery, her glee is scorn, and her wordplay a tapestry of repressed anger. I have known numerous women like this - mainly from having being a single man in New York and Boston. The bartender's glare is an admonition: "Stay away, pal, if you know what's good for you."
