Top Bush Supporters Set to Launch Anti-Miers Ad Campaign

A 30-second TV ad is set to air tomorrow, Wednesday, that some believe may be as effective at helping stop the Harriett Miers confirmation as the Swift Boat ads were in helping stop John Kerry.

BetterJustice.org, a conservative grass-roots organization, created and funded the hard-hitting anti-Miers (but pro-Bush) ad. The organization's board of directors includes several otherwise staunch Republican stalwarts, such as David Frum and Linda Chavez.

"Miers is no more qualified to sit on the Supreme Court than I am to be a sumo wrestler!" So stated the so very un-sumo-like Ann Coulter.

I just cannot get over Bork, who couldn't get himself on the Court, criticizing this nomination.

To the contrary, Howlin, I'm not the one who's questioning somone's authenticity or condemning their genuineness regarding their conservatism simply because their opinion differs from my own or many other's general understanding of conservative principles and values.

We got 8 years of Bill Clinton because the GOP is inept.

Bill Clinton didn't get a majority. The "conservatives" went over to vote for the little hand grenade with a bad haircut because they got their panties in a wad over increasing taxes.

So, what happened? We got Bill Clinton, who also raised taxes.

I see the Miers thing is still up front and burning...

I really don't know whether she can be confirmed or not but I'd love to see the Senators have to stand in the well of the Senate and get on record with a vote of yea/nay so all could see where they actually stand rather than what they pontificate to anyone that will listen. That's the process and it should be carried out to completion rather than President Bush withdrawing her name or Ms. Miers asking it to be withdrawn. The Senators don't need a freebie on this process. But a freebie is what they'd like to have happen.

Even if you restricted yourself to members of FR, and construed every undecided vote to be one in favor of Miers' confirmation, then you would still only have 53% of FReepers in favor of Miers.

In other words, 47% of a representative sampling of this website OPPOSE the confirmation of Harriet Miers, and if the survey is broadened to include non-members her support declines even further.

"Screaming"

Not aware of that, unless screaming means expressing an opinion strongly.

"calling Miers a "paper stapler," a "cleaning lady,""

That is not right. Such opinions should be admonished.

"endlessly posting her writings"

I see no problem with that. This is a public forum and this an important issue.

"and snickering, calling her "a waste of a human being,"

That would be wrong.

"and running ads against her on national cable television is what howling mobs do."

Well, really the ads are against her nomination, not her.

So basically, you're using the tactic of finding the very worst opinions expressed in opposition to her nomination to attack the entirety of her opposition. And when there is logical, non-inflammatory opinion expressed against her nomination, you attack the speaker, i.e. Frum.

Um, that still means that almost 60 percent either approve or are waiting for the hearings.

A smaller number is in favor of the nomination than is for it. In any event, do you think that 40% is a small number? Is it just a lunatic fringe?

Do you think none of that 60 percent is conservative, or are they just not conservative "enough" for you?

This might come as a surprise to you, but most are not objecting to her nomination because she is not conservative enough. The problem is that we don't know if she will be a judicial activist.

For example, I don't care about Roe v Wade, gay marriage or prayer in school or anything like that. I just want someone that has a track record of ruling by what the law says and not by what person feelings or politics.

"Why after the Roberts selection was it then manditory to pick a female to replace a female?"

I don't know. Political considerations? If so, there were many more qualified female nominees.

Parties exist to win elections. The GOP lost. Stop blaming the competition and fix the party.

So, what happened? We got Bill Clinton, who also raised taxes.

But then we got control of the house in 94. If Bush had been reelected, that never would have happened.

Just like Ford losing to Carter to pave the way for Reagan, Bush losing to Clinton turned out to be a positive.

Do the words "New World Order" mean anything to you?

I have not attacked Meirs personally once, my objections are based on the fact that despite two supreme court picks, GWB managed to keep the court status quo.

Are you comfortable about Meirs supporting race-based quotas? That's real conservative for sure!
Are you comfortable that Andrew Card (Who helped pick Souter) was the main proponent of this pick?

Are you comfortable that GWB chose to pick Harry Reid's first suggestion to him?

These are real questions, not attacks. And please don't respond with "I Trust the President." That is a cop-out not an answer or reasoned explanation to this otherwise mysterious pick.

"Hey, if you think Miers is a dunce, it's perfectly OK to point out that Frum does, in fact, have a fat face."

I don't think Miers is a dunce. So what's your reason for personally insulting Frum again?

"Destroy a human being? Since when did opposing someone sitting on the Supreme Court amount to destroying them. Please. Your hyperbole does nothing but discredit your opinions."

Oh BS, there is a deliberate 'game a foot' to have Meirs
withdraw and/or certainly not be confirmed..... good Lord, she hasn't said a thing YET and she's referred to as a "Cleaning Lady"? If that is not trashing a person, then I don't know what it would be called. It's revolting to listen to these talking heads on the cable news shows.
LET THE LADY SPEAK!!! Give her that much at the very least.

The rhetoric is getting very steamed around here! I can see both sides to this argument. I still do support this president but he got elected to do a job and to do certain things while on the job. He is not doing the very things he was elected to do.

One can still support him but demand he get the train back on the tracks. The man needs to veto some spending, get our illegal immigration problem under control and do something about this nomination. If he neglects to do any of these things--how can anyone who calls themself a conservative continue to support him? He is making it very hard.
