In trying to be everything to everyone...they've lost their compass and are therefore, afraid to boldly lead the nation. You got that right.

I for one am a Conservative who is desperately looking for a way out of this. I love this president. The only reason I read this dissertation is because I have listened to HH and believe him to be thoughtful. I figured if anyone could give me a reason to end my opposition it would be him.
Sadly I was wrong. If you read this thing from beginning to end it makes a lot of valid points from a Political point of view...but as with most pro Miers pieces, it gives not a single argument for why she is qualified or deserves to sit in such an exalted position. Again we're told that we should trust Bush...Based on what?!
This was the time for the Battle! Thais was the time to smoke the Democrats out of their holes. This was the time to do the principles thing and take the Battle to the Democrats. This may be our last opportunity to change a swing vote to a truly Conservative one. This could be our last opportunity to put an unapologetic Conservative up there to add one more voice of reason to that of Thomas & Scalia. The Chess board was set. The pieces were in place...the work of a generation of Conservatives led to this moment...and he threw it up against the wall. Every thing we had done up to that Monday morning was smashed in an instant.
Since then, we've had to make the same arguments that we've criticized the Democrats for making. Now we're in the position of asking for privileged documents so we have an idea who Miers is and what she believes.
I agree with HH...forcing her withdrawal is not good for the President. Neither is allowing her to go forward and having her either embarrass the President or having her get to the court and turn out to be another Souter. In fact, this would be infinitely more damaging.
Tell me why I should support this Nominee. Tell me about her and what she will do on the Court. Don't tell me you believe she would do one thing or another...prove it to me.
Help me out of this please because if something doesn't change soon I will be in on the other side of this President and I don't see how I will ever trust him again!

Several female originalists have been proposed. Seems Hugh Hewitt had a different standard for Janice Rogers Brown last July:
"You see, I've tried to explain to people about Judge Janice Rogers Brown, that she has not been a federal judge. And my concern over her and Priscilla Owen is, that federal judges just do different things than state judges.
And I want to see a little bit from them, before you run as a conservative. I don't want to run blind. And I think she really hasn't done, for example, federalism issues, hasn't done federal pre-emption, hasn't interpreted the free exercise of the establishment clause, though there are Constitutional counterparts in California.
That's my concern, Erwin. I just don't think they're reliable enough when it comes to understanding how they'll handle federal issues."

No, it's not, that's why he adds the argument that THE ENTIRE FUTURE OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HANGS ON SUPPORTING HER! (or maybe not, but probably yes.)
But it's still just "trust me" and it's not enough.

I have done the same. . .see them on Fox News. . .turn the station. . .Anne Coulter guesting. . .don't watch. Sick of their whining. . .calling it 'honest debate/disagreement'. . .think they have made a huge mistake. . .
And then there is Bill Kristol. . .and the esteemed Charles Krauthammer. . .and then Mona. . .who have not 'whined' but have offered serious protest.
Good grief. . .way too many of them.

He lays out reasons why the nomination is sound.
He doesn't lay out why her nomination is sound. He makes a weak case for why we should support any nomination made by the President.

I read the whole article. It is, as he says, extremely long, and very short on substance when he finally gets around to Miers. The only reasons he offered in support that I could find were "trust me" and "she's an Evangelical."
Those reasons are insufficient, as has been amply argued in numerous other threads.
On the whole, I do trust Bush. But it's more and more obvious in this case that he has been taken in by superficial mannerisms, has failed to vet the candidate, and has based his nomination on liking for her rather than on any kind of record at all.
As for her being an Evangelical. That isn't enough in itself, any more than it would be if she were a Catholic. Maybe 30% of Evangelicals voted for Kerry in the last election. Most of them are conservatives, but by no means all of them. And there are plenty of reasons to classify Miers as a liberal on many important issues.

I read the article. The whole article.
His argument relies on Trust Bush. Trust Bush because he is our President and America will come to an end if we don't.
Sorry, Hugh, you drank the koolaid and I will not.
GWB will pick himself up and move on. The world will not come to an end if he does not get his way by putting a WOMAN only in that seat.
A crony, a cypher, private and personal lawyer does not belong in one of the most important LIFETIME jobs in this great country. It's not just that we don't know her. She has spent her whole life making certain that NOBODY knows her.
And if I am wrong about his ability to pick himself up and get back down to business, then we are in a whole lot of trouble, no matter what he does.
He has my on-going prayers for strength, peace of mind and wisdom.

Right up there with Ralph Peters, as far as national security/military commentators-with real world experience-are concerned.

The only defense for the nominee I can think of is, "trust Bush." Is that a sufficient defense? As opposed to?
let's see, trust Buchannan?
Kristol?
Will?
Fund?
Frum?
Perot?
Specter?
Leahy?
These are the folks you're allying with AGAINST THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WHO IS FIGHTING THE JIHADISTS.
You're either with us or you're with the terrorists.
