30-Year-Old Grandpa [originally "Family life inspires Kutcher role "]
BBC ^ | Wednesday, 19 October 2005 | staff writer

Posted on 10/19/2005 9:46:06 AM PDT by SunkenCiv

The show is said to be "loosely based" on Kutcher's new family life, with some key variations, a 20th Century Fox Television spokesman said... set in Chicago rather than Hollywood, and centres on a 30-year-old nightclub owner and a fortysomething businesswoman who get married and discover they are expecting a child. At the same time, the woman's 22-year-old daughter announces she is pregnant and plans to move home to raise her baby - turning the show's leading man into a grandfather overnight.

Um, not exactly, IMO. He’s a gonna-be father that happens to be married to a gonna-be grandmother, but no, he’s nobody’s grandpa. I’m as much grandpa to the kid as he is.

Interesting. When my brother was 30, his 38 year-old wife's 18 year-old daughter gave birth to a baby boy, making my brother a 30 year-old grandfather. Many jokes were made. ;)

Gotta be better than "The West Wing" or "Doonesbury". ;') Or CBS/ABC/NBC nightly news for that matter.

I'm My Own Grandpa

Lyrics: Dwight Latham, Moe Jaffe
Music: Dwight Latham, Moe Jaffe

Played by Jerry Garcia with David Grisman

Oh, many, many years ago
When I was twenty-three
I was married to a widow
Who was pretty as can be
This widow had a grown-up daughter
Who had hair of red
My father fell in love with her
And soon the two were wed

This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life
For my daughter was my mother
'Cause she was my father's wife
To complicate the matter
Though it really brought me joy
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy

This little baby then became
A brother-in-law to Dad
And so became my uncle
Though it made me very sad
For if he was my uncle
Then that also made him brother
Of the widow's grown-up daughter
WHo of course is my step-mother

Chorus
I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
Oh, I'm my own grandpa

My father's wife then had a son
Who kept them on the run
And he became my grandchild
For he was my daughter's son
My wife is now my mother's mother
And it makes me blue
Because although she is my wife
She's my grandmother too

Now if my wife is my grandmother
Then I'm her grandchild
And every time I think of it
It nearly drives me wild
For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw
As husband of my grandma
I am my own grandpa

[chorus]

I have been enjoying this older woman / younger man trend for awhile now, but marriage is not something I've ever considered. Marriage is serious stuff, and suffers when it is incorporated into social fads.
I'm sure there are genuine love stories involving wide age ranges, but they are not common, and this dating trend has become so pervasive now that it feels silly, as most fashionable things eventually do.

Sorry, but that doesn't make him a grandfather anymore than marrying the woman in the first place made him the daughter's father. My ex may remarry, but that only makes that guy her new husband, not my son's father, and nobody feels that more strongly than my son.

The whole premise to all this is that the titles given to a person involved in some woman's life are hers to bestow with no concern for biological or social reality. Too many women think they can define and re-define these things according to their latest romance.

Do I detect a little Moral Relativism in your post? :-)

Well, maybe you should tell that to the kid because he calls my brother "Grampa." I guess I never had a grandfather either since the only grandfather I ever knew was my widowed grandmother's second husband. They were married before I was born, as well. You can KMA because that great man WAS my grandfather, regardless of your "holier-than-thou" definition.

There's no reason why he couldn't be a real grandfather at 30; it's already been documented that one man was a grandfather at 29.

Why are we so obsessed with the magic age of 18?

We had to use that song to make a family tree in biology. It was a nightmare. One thing I always wondered about the song, isn't it illegal (or shouldn't it be) to marry your step-granddaughter?

Well, yeah, but I thought it would contrast with the immoral relativism of their marriage ceremony. ;')
