If I lived anywhere along the Gulf Coast right now, I would seriously be out of there already.

My folks live in Southwest Florida and have been unable to find accommodations that would accept their dog. They're now up to a radius of 5 hours away from where they live and still trying to find a hotel that will take pets. There is no way that they are going to leave the dog. He's 10 years old and deathly afraid of even normal thunderstorms.

So they're willing to risk their lives for a 10 year old dog?

Why not just drive? Sleep in their car somewhere. It's probably going to be better than trying to ride out a Cat4/5 storm, if it hits at that level.

And to anyone that says "Oh, it will weaken a lot before it hits land...blah blah blah...". I think one thing we learned from this season alone, thus far, is that predictions are almost worthless this far out. Life is not worth a silly assumption.

piperpilot, do a net search for "pet friendly hotels" and you'll find several sites with listings for them.

Piper, go to google and key in "Motels which accept pets." LetsGoPets.com, and takeyourpet.com are two I found. Hope they find a place.

Piper - what County are they in. I live in SW Florida and will look at shelters in their county and get back to you.

Tell them to get a pet carrier. WSHTF, nobody counts # people in a room or pets. AND, when they get to wherever they are going... they can call a pet shelter. As long as the pet is in a carrier, and not in the room they are okay. Work that out when they get to their destination. If they pick a destination, maybe you could call around arranging for the pet.

Well here in sunny Boca Raton we are all excited. Really, it is too early to prognosticate, but our local weather folks say it will weaken because of cooler waters and wind shear. Plus they maintain that, because of factors beyond my understanding, the various computer models even though they appear to agree very much are highly inaccurate at this stage. That said, we are getting prepared!!!
