In the last months there has been a lot of interest expressed on FR about aircraft carriers. I have found that there is a lot of interest all over the net.
So, I created a web site about all of the World's Aircraft Carriers. It will surprise you how many countries operate at least one...and also how many are building large-deck Amphibious Assault ships.
Of course, no one holds a candle at this time to America's capabilities in this regard.
Please enjoy, and let me know what you think. I hope it serves as a resource for naval enthusiasts everywhere. Just click on the banner below and take a look:
"passing through the Mediteranean, the Suez Canal, around the Cape of Good Hope, across the Indian Ocean, through the Straits of Malacca, into the China Sea and finally to Dalien, China"
Seems like an odd route that goes from the Med, through the Suez and then on to the Indian Ocean by way of the Cape of Good hope. If their navigation was that bad then I don't think that the earlier statement would really apply:
"a cruise that the big ship, now without rudders or engines, made in surprisingly good condition"
Of course, not having rudders or engines might just explain it. ;^>
(Now watch, I'm missing something really simple and I'm completely wrong - ah well)
The Kitty Hawk had three ships in its class...the other two are decommissioned and retired now. The Enterprise was a class of one.
Nicely done Jeff...
We only have 4??? I thought we had the "Reagan".
Thanks for the ping! Kudos!
Great site Jeff.
Bookmarked
Check it out now.
I was thinking the same thing.
Click on the Nimits name or link. There are nine carrier in the Nimitz class. That first page just lists them by class. We have a total of twelve carriers, nine of them Nimitz class.
Nice website.
Off Topic, A story that needs to be told via a movie, (or it's sunken hull found on the Discovery Program) is the sinking of the "Shinano" Japan's Secret Carrier of WWII.
Any others here on the Freep Familiar with that story?
Thank you all. Hope it is a good source of info for you should you need it, or be interested!
Click on the Nimitz class pic or name. The first page lists by Class...the Reagan is a NImitz class vessel and is listed there under that class.
That was one big sucker of a carrier at the end of WWII. One of our subs got her on her trials. Apparently, her watertight integrity was pretty bad. Mut have been a site to see in that sub captains periscope!
I got to drive a Subaru on the Connie once. Flight deck, down the elevator, through the hanger deck and down a 30 degree ramp to the pier.
Thanks, Jeff- I need is another addictive site. Will be watching for updates on the Chinese "Casino Class" carriers.
Wild!
Sorry to add to your pain...hehehe. Seriously, I hope you enjoy the site.
Global Security has a LOT of good info. I have considered doing something similar...but listing all of the names with them. That graphic is missing a few but makes the point very effectively.
