Yes -

-The insurgents voted on staying home. Attacks on this election's polling sites are a fraction of what they were last time. Despite widespread threats, the big attacks failed to materialize. Don't think the locals didn't notice.

-Many of the Sunnis are risking becoming part of the process, rather than getting locked out by their own intransigence. Once we get them taking that risk of believing in their own future, the allure of mujahideen glory will fade fast.

-A lot of Iraqis want to us to leave, because they feel that they're ready, and don't need us. The more they believe that they can govern themselves, the more it will be true. It sure won't be pretty by our standards, but it'll be head and shoulders above anything else in this neck of the woods.

This is the psychological edge that we need. Not to sound sappy, but hope of fixing their country is the only thing that will defeat fear of the mujahideen.

"South of Basra, three armed men attacked an empty polling station at 3 a.m.; the three were arrested, police said."

"Looks like the insurgents are scraping the bottom of the barrel for recruits! ;-)"

LOL - What time do the bars close in Basra ?
