They are a brave and determined people huh?

Especially the Iraqi Police who have been repeatedly bombed while standing in line to join as well as attacks on their police headquarters etc. Yet they continue on.

Beautiful sentiment, iraqikurd. I hope and pray that one day soon, all Iraqis will be able to appreciate the high value of a free and democratic country, and if what is happening today is any sign, soon Iraq will be entering a beautiful new dawn.

Whenever they show the scenes, I get a lump in my throat...kinda like when one of your children experience their "firsts"...

like first day of school, first voting experience, etc!!!

I would like to have seen some of the people at the Millions Man March acknowledge what is going on in Iraq...there are minorities in that country that are participating this time...that never have "officially" voted before...sigh

I wonder why I am so elated. I have no relatives in Iraq but God bless our military, ever one of them. THEY'VE got to be happy today. As well they should.

I'm still in this manic phase so I got out the cell and called everyone I know. I told them how happy I was. And WHY.

My niece, who suffers my politics but isn't quite there, said she "heard" there was an election today. I waxed on and on and in due course, she became happy too.

Finally I called my daughter, God love her, with whom I argue politics a plenty. She's SLIGHTLY liberal although that has changed greatly since she's had a child of her own.

"Melissa," I shouted into the phone. "We're WINNING. They voted in Iraq today. Turnout is high."

You know what she said? Made me smile.

"Yeah," she responded with enthusiasm. "Even the Sunnis are voting."

God bless she knew that. God bless she's paying attention. God bless that beautiful granddaughter of mine will never have to wear a burqua.

Us Americans who carry this country on our backs, we'll NEVER be against freedom. Who could ever be against a free people?

can't explain it. Somebody help me. But I am simply BEYOND excited. This is history, HISTORY. I must smile

Felt the same way watching the Berlin Wall come down. Know exactly the feeling you are talking about.

"A Battle Won"

Through the heat of the day their hope burns bright

After long years of death, despair and darkness

Hope is kindling

As with any birth, there is blood and pain and suffering

Doubts and fears wage war with hopes and dream

Councils of cowardice vanquished by the courage of the free

And the Liberty's champions around the world, smile secret delight, as their newest comrades takes their first tentative steps,

while Uncle Sam's brave children add the name "Iraq" to their forefathers proud battle flags

I agree its something to behold, especially in light of
the sacrifices made to get us all to this point.

High turnout in the crucial 3 Sunni provinces, hopefully the Shites and Kurds there can win one of the 3 and Iraq will have its constitunion.

Even the MSM appears to in a corner where they have to report the good news today.

I just sent an email this morning about the DOD/America Supports You sponsored HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Oct2005/20051014_3045.html

and followed with my cut and paste of the election with a note that I just wanted to share the gifts America's sons and daughters have given today.

Perhaps the elation comes because
today is a priceless glimpse inside humanity's soul.
It's hard to find the words to describe 'today'.

The 1934 consolidation of powers of president and chancellor which made Hitler supreme leader was by vote of the electorate. They could've rejected that and forced a new presidential election. Instead 95.7% of votes approved of Hilter on August 19, 1934.

Looks like an election to me

Yep a stalinesque barnburner that one was. Crazy kim in modern North Korea has the same type of elections.

Yes, I wrote it this morning. Feel free to use it any way you see fit. It is my small way of saying "Thank you" to all those who are sacrificing, especially the 1900+ who gave us their everything, so we could see this day.
