I couldn't agree more - lets split it. They can have their own Internet that will have all of the utility, efficacy and transparency of a 3rd world bureaucracy.
Their very own internet will have all of the viability of Air America in a competitive world.
If the internet splits, it will be an overseas split, not an American split. And that's their problem, not ours.
Other countries can't control the Internet because we have Organizations that control the "Root Servers". Other root server operators include Verisign, NASA Ames Research Center, the U.S. Army Research Lab, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers(AKA ICANN), the Internet Software Consortium and Network Solutions to name a few. Why the rest of the countries on earth can't be happy with the "12 Secondary Servers" spread throughout the world is beyond me. Can anyone else imagine what John Kerry or Al Gore would've done to the internet already??? Ughhhhh.

I'm no expert, but I think what's happening is simply that the Chinese and a few other countries are trying to design an internet that is incompatible with the US internet so that they can more easily control traffic for censorship purposes. The EU is trying to use this event as a propaganda tool, claiming that the US is mismanaging the internet and thereby encouraging the Chinese and others to opt out, when in fact it has nothing to do with what the US is doing. The EU is trying to work a deal with the Chinese and others that will keep the internet from fragmenting by isolating the US from the rest of the world on the internet, but I can't see that happening. The Chinese don't want their own citizens to visit European websites any more than they do American websites.
Of course, if the Chinese play along with the EU, that will be very interesting. It will certainly undermine the Chinese efforts to censor the internet. And it will put the EU at a disadvantage in that they will be well connected to the Chinese, the Brazilians, and the Iranians, but they will no longer be connected to the US, which is a much bigger enchelada.
Finally, I'm not sure that any of these censorship efforts will be of any use to the censors. I am guessing that it will take Silicon Valley only a few months to put software on the market that can access Chinese internet portals.

Nah, that's just the reason it will never happen. They won't be able to send us those viruses, and they aren't going to give up that.

I see it the exact same way. They are forming an anti-american alliance. They want to unwind our influence and reduce US power worldwide. They want to tie gulliver down. The EU russia and china will be big allies in the future just watch they all are power hungry.
