but the Internet won't literally "split apart" if other countries decide to start their own root servers
<<

Yeah. They seem to miss the whole point of how the Internet works in the first place.

If the Internet did split, would that mean that we in US would not have access to the news in China, EU, etc?

We don't have access to the "news" in China right now...no big loss...people will figure a way to make the multiple internets communicate if we need to.

honestly, is there anything wrong in the world that wasn't caused by the $%!#!$!. no matter what goes wrong somehow and someway he really did find a way to cause it.

no matter how much i hate the republicans and their spending we can NEVER let those UN butt kissing fools back into the whitehouse.

This whole things is a HUGE big deal. I honestly can't understand why no one is talking about this. What is at stake is handing over the internet(we control) over to the UN and china and all the other dirtbag speech nazis in the world.

It is a 'huge big deal' and have been wondering the same. . .WHEN will this be dealt with. . .did just heard Brit bring this up. . .albeit calmly. . .on Fox News.

So we let the 'third worlder's' develop their own net!

The alternatives are far more dire for the free world. . .

Surely we do not acquiesce here. . .

MR.Ramsbotham:The only things that are really "controlled" are IP address space and DNS. Of course those are fairly large items.

PatriciaRuth: For people in Europe, FreeRepublic is like Radio Free Europe. We are the Voice of America.

The voice of the 'free world' is spam to them. . .and they can control 'spam'. . .

Ok. Let it split. We keep the conservative sites such as FR. They can have the socialist/communist/homosexual/child porn/all other porn/liberal sites. That means we have the good stuff and they have the garbage.

I see no need to make people choose between naked women and Free Republic when they can have both.

Very misleading article - the internet will not "split" or "fall" apart - rather, nations will have to decide if they want continued access to American websites and companies.

If a nation decides they don't care about its access to American websites, services, companies, etc., and doesn't care if its companies, websites, etc. are easily accessed by Americans, they are more than free to setup their own root servers.

My guess is, a few token countries (perhaps some of the fundamentalist Muslim countries) will break off.

China and the European Union would lose too much economically to play around with this. They can **** in one hand and wish in the other, and they know which will fill up faster - in the end, it will be business as usual.

The US government, which funded the development of the internet in the 60s, said in June it intended to retain its role overseeing Icann, reneging on a pledge made during Bill Clinton's presidency.

So Clinton pledged to give it away ?

..... Let the eurotrash create ......

There is some question about the Eurotrash actually being involved. The hubbub is being raisde by Eurotrash leaders.

The actual rank and file, ordinary Eurotrash probably actually like the internet as it is.

"trust"

You are correct sir.

90% of the Internet IS the US backbone and core infrastructure. Over 80% of bits transmitted originate here.

Let 'em split it. Our ISP's can charge HUGE bucks to inter-connect the national islands of networks to the "real" internet.
