I believe we should retain control of ICANN - but the Internet won't literally "split apart" if other countries decide to start their own root servers. In many cases, a web site can be reached by IP address as well as domain name.
Organizations like IANA and IETF which are in charge of IP address assignment and network routing are more critical in keeping the Internet unified.

The EU would ban us as "hate mongers" or some other claptrap in order to control their masses better, and keep the socialist propaganda unchallenged.
Fight to keep the internet under U.S. control. (Can't use exclamation points any more lest someone think I'm mushy.)
The internet should remain with those who created it. Imagine the internet in the hands of France - it would be unavailable because of strikes for six months in a year.

The US must tell these bozos to shove this nonsense where the sun don't shine.... if they really want to create their own internet ghetto without us, FINE, we'll even let them have Algore to invent it for them!! That's our 'compromise'..... countries that don't want to be part of OUR internet can have Algore and an internet of their very own.... that's what I call a WIN-WIN situation, as long as they promise to keep Algore and never give him up.
Censorship is, frankly, a modest hazard here. The major threat to the internet if it were to be managed by the EU and/or UN would be taxation of online business transactions. Imagine if every ticket or trinket you bought, every stock you traded, every auction item on eBay, had a "world development" tax attached to it, which would be sent to unelected, unaccountable law-unto-themselves bureaucrats in Brussels or UN HQ, and which could be raised at will by that same criminal element.
That is why the Euroscum are salivating over the internet. Once they have all your money at risk, they couldn't care less what you say about them.
Ha! Let it split! They can have their broke arse crappoly, and we will continue to kick that arse all over the virtual place!
The only things that are really "controlled" are IP address space and DNS. Of course those are fairly large items.

The next Democrat president will no doubt try to give control of the internet to the UN, EU, or China. We actually need to put a law in place here in the U.S. to stop it. Control by any of those parties will lead to secularist/leftist censorship of non-PC speech.
Then we'll see who "CONTROLS" the Internet.
