Miers Remorse: Conservatives are right to be skeptical
http://www.opinionjournal.com ^ | 10/10/05 | JOHN FUND

Posted on 10/09/2005 9:29:32 PM PDT by BCrago66

I have changed my mind about Harriet Miers. Last Thursday, I wrote in OpinionJournal's Political Diary that "while skepticism of Ms. Miers is justified, the time is fast approaching when such expressions should be muted until the Senate hearings begin. At that point, Ms. Miers will finally be able to speak for herself."

But that was before I interviewed more than a dozen of her friends and colleagues along with political players in Texas. I came away convinced that questions about Ms. Miers should be raised now--and loudly--because she has spent her entire life avoiding giving a clear picture of herself. "She is unrevealing to the point that it's an obsession," says one of her close colleagues at her law firm.

That's correct, but we can watch her demeanor and how she handles the questions -- both the legitimate and the rude queries.

Take on the gang of 14. George Bush takes on terrorists daily. Surely he can bring some heat on the Senate.

Break out the veto pen
Use bully pulpit
Conservative media blitz
Town hall meetings explaining the Constitution

These Senators think they are immune since no one ever challenges them. They are spineless blowhards. All talk no action.

I find that all of these pundits are calling for conservative credentials and a paper trail just like Souter, Kennedy, and OConnor had. Oh, wait a minute ........

No way. You're saying 73 percent of Freepers like this cipher Miers? I imagine the only way you got this figure is by looking at an online poll, which measures only those who notice it and chose to click, i.e., it's unscientific and worthless. Just read any thread on the Miers picks and it will be evident where the majority of Freepers stand.

We're not primarily Bush loyalists. We support President Bush because he (usually) agrees with and acts in accordence with certain principles. But he didn't this time.

I think it's funny so many Freepers support Miers. If she feels this way about the Federalist Society, I doubt she could be very fond of FR (that is, if she even knows what FR is).

You are ignoring the fact the head of The Federalist Society, Leo Leonard, has endorsed her.

No, it's not a relief.

Far from it.

For anyone who's spent even a minute of his or her life attempting to establish credibility for the conservative cause in this country, forcefully refuting the timeworn leftist nostrums that we're intellectually inferior, or trying to convince the public that our cause is just on ethical, intellectual, and political grounds this is an unmitigated disaster.

Question: Is she the BEST qualified person in the US to serve on the Supreme Court?
Answer: No

Question: Is she in the top 10?
Answer: No

Question: Is she in the top 100?
Answer: Maybe

Question: Why has she been nominated?
Answer: Your guess is as good as anybodies.

A. Because she's a friend of George W. Bush and fulfills his gender quota for the Court.

Yeah but when he was up for confirmation he didn't stand for anything. Without a fight you get what you get IMO.

That is not possible.

Don't you get it?
McCain and the cabal WANT to undermine POTUS.

POTUS is playing the senate hand he has been dealt.

He is trying to successfully run a SOUTHERN, Christian woman who he knows personally and professionally right on by them under the radar screen, but our hysterical, pouting side of talking heads are making it difficult. Why? I think because they wanted a fight more than a solid nominee.

All the apper trails in the world do not guarantee anything once those folks are confirmed. I'm betting that her loyalty to POTUS will hold true. Sandra's did (for the most part) before RWR got sick.

Whose judgement do you trust more... POTUS'S or Billy Kristol's who such a conservative that he backed McCain?

BTW, there is hope yet:

Half of Senate Republicans doubt Miers
http://www.washtimes.com/national/20051010-121707-4311r.htm

Nearly half of Senate Republicans say they remain unconvinced that Harriet Miers is worthy of being confirmed to the Supreme Court, according to a survey conducted by The Washington Times.

ooooooooh...is she from the SOUTH?!? Well guess that means she's jus' folks! We can now forget about about her lack of intellectual qualifications; after all, she's a good ol' boy. I mean girl.

McCain can't undermine Bush. Only Bush can undermine Bush. McCain is a Cindy Sheehan - a kook. Shine the spotlight on him and he'll cave quicker than Trent Lott.

Well, if Ann Coulter is right, and if Bush is passive aggressive, why not shove Alberto at everyone if they succeed in trashing Miers?

Oh, for Heaven's sake, posting Ann's name with it slashed out? You know what that reminds people of? The ChiCom "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution" where names of "capitalist roaders" were written and then crossed out and hung on dissenters as they were paraded around. You guys are totalitarians---no question in my mind any more.

Why? I think because they wanted a fight more than a solid nominee.

That's not quite fair. They wanted a fight FOR a solid moninee, but most of them have failed to think through the consequences of losing that fight.
